Need help choosing new salt mix

See my IO is coming out to 11.3 dkh @1.025, too high when using a reactor.

Did tm come out to 350/7/900 @1.025 consistently?

For the 200g bucket I bought, and the 4 or 5 small sample boxes I had, yes.

No way in heck to justify paying $70 a bucket when I can get IO for $29.99

hmmmm Have you been using it for long enough to form an opinion?

I just switched last week. I have no opinion good or bad, just that all the elements are at good levels.

Actually, Randy Holmes Farley uses all the same stuff I do. He's lab tested it, and most of it is more pure than the stuff sold in the aquarium industry. Most of it is lab grade, or close, we just bought in bulk for group buys.

If you want to ignore that (ESV,Kent, TM, etc) Kalk is just repackaged Calcium hydroxide, fine, but saying you can't use the industrial grade stuff is silly.

The whole " I wouldnt use it" beacause it doesnt have a TM/Kent/Deltec/ESV/etc lable on it, is ignorant, and non productive.

agreed, i have been using nothing but mrs wages and baking soda and prestone driveway heat for years; there are enough expensive things in this hobby already, no need to shell out more cash for something exactly the same as these at 1/10 of the price.

Using IO...also considering i went from SSB to BB and needed extra Wc's to get the sand and deitrus out...i went through a bucket(160g) in 7 weeks...im on the second bucket....(this is since i moved the tank to my new house JUly 12th...

first batch of IO mixed to 1.026:>>>

CA=360
ALK=10.6
MG=1200

second batch(160 bucket too):>>>>

CA=360
ALK=11
MG=1200

so the good thing it is fairly consistent and the ALK 10.6-11 difference very well could have been a testing error with just 1 drop missing the test vial would be all it took

however...i have to add the CA part of a 2 part that I have had sitting around and ESV Mg....already adjusting the first bucket i went through 3/4 of the gallon of C-Balance to get CA to 420 on the new salt mixes.....and 1 32 oz bottle of ESV to get MG to 1300...

in the long run this can be expensive...

what is everyone testing reef crystals at.....probably just higher in CA and same ALK and same MG as regular IO....

My thing with TM is that i read alot of different salt reports and people testing and alot of them tested TM as having measurable phosphates...this could have been a marketing ploy or errors in testing by hobbyists but it didnt sound good...also there are reports that people who have switched from IO/RC to TM got algae blooms which coincides with the phosphates thing...i know IO has 0 phosphates and i like that

i wont use dow or Mag flake either....just dont want to tinker with it..

so somone answer this....Why cant someone make a salt for SPS hobbyists with the params right in line?? it cant bet that difficult

the korrlen zucht salt sounds good....got a price....probably 20 buck a bucket extra for shipping isnt it...

Anyone using TM pro reef??? test it for me and shoot me some params!!

for those that say i use this and thats it...please post some paramaters of freshly mixed salt otherwise what you use is of no use to us!!!!!

Serioussnaps- The info that I posted earlier in the thread is for TM Pro- Reef. It is the only salt I have used for reefs for over a year and a half.

My criteria of alkalinity of less than 10dkh and consistency led me to 2 choices:
HW Marine Mix
Tropic Marine Pro
After some research it I could not find anyone with anything bad to say about HW. Most that stopped using it, seemed to migrate back. TMP had a lot of good reviews but also a few reports that algae problems cropped up with usage. Some think the salt is high in Po4, not my claim just what I’ve read. So with everything considered I ordered a box of HW. I am going to mix up a batch and test alk,ca,mag. If the alk levels comes in 8 dkh or under I am going to mix it 50/50 with reef crystals that I have left to bring up alk and use up my stock of RC. This will also help to condition my tank to the new salt. My tank was not happy when I changed from IO to RC cold turkey! If that works I'll order 4-5 (maybe more when DFS brings back free shipping) more cases and if they numbers hold up like Nuclear reefs suggest, they'll become the set points for my tank. It would be so nice to not have to play around with additives with every water change. :)

Does anyone know more about the aquacraft? He posted tests for a bunch of brands.....but I couldn't find a test done on his. Closest is just the "90 of 100" or "100 of 100" etc. on the buy page for each salt type.

Thanks,

Todd

:thumbsup: Just make sure you aireate the water before water changes.... I promise you wont dislike this salt.. you will notice a distinct smell of the beach when you mix it as well.... Most people I know that use HW never go back to anything more.. it might cost a little more.. but do you wont be sorry.... If you dont like it.. I will buy the unopened bags you get..... hows that? :)

heck yeah...test that out and dont forget to post the params!!!!

i am interested in a salt that makes things much easier....Could it be the one?

thanks btw pyrrhus
