Need help choosing new salt mix

I think it is impossible to have definative, reliable results from testing, unless the tests were preformed from hundreds of metros across the country. I would be interested to see the different affects caused by the different water systems across the country. It all comes down to what you ahve success with, and sticking with it. But one person testing it in Penn State does not give reliable enough results to make rash conclusions about each brand. just my 2 cents

You do have to admit, there is a bit of "noise" regarding this issue. More than a couple people have reported algea issues. I can't speak first hand but it did sway me to HW.

IO and Oceaniac 50/50 Mix comes out very, very close to that SeriousSnaps.

Whiskey

Just wanted to bring some attention to this comment. I use this 50-50 mixture for waterchanges, have a Ca reactor to maintain levels, and never dose anything.

I had been using Reef Crystals for a year and decided to upgrade to TM for the elevated numbers for Calcium, Alk and Mg. I went through a 200 gallon bucket with no issues. I picked up a bucket of TMPro and all "algae" broke loose in my tank. I am now back to plain TM and battling the issue with phosphate removers and I just purchased a TLF Phosphate reactor to hook up as well. I did not have good luck with TMPro!

You switched from Reef Crystals to Tropic Marin looking for higher calcium, alk, and Mag? That seems backwards to me. My TM was always low in Mag, and alk.

TM and TM pro do cause algae outbreaks and it has been tested by far more than 1 person for phosphates. Most people that test it find phosphates and this can explain the so called "anomaly"(even though its not) of algae outbreaks using TM Pro especially. I guess if you run a GFO with it then it wont matter but thats another topic. I used TM for just one 50 G bag on my old softie tank about 2 years ago and it broke out with hair algae...switched back to IO and the hair algae stopped but i had to pull it all out.

When tons of people report the same thing and many tests confirm it...you are probably safe in the assumption that there is a problem with TM...but there is problems with all salts just in different areas...hopefully the HW will be a great alternative as that is what we are all looking for.

If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck....its probably a duck. (referring to the reports of numerous algae outbreaks with tm salts)

Got the HW today. First impressions:

-It does not have that medicinal smell like Reef Crystals
-It mixes very well, nothing even made it to the bottom of the can
-It does not get hot when you rub it.
-It tastes like crap according to my wife Shes been following the thread and had to get in on the "heat test". Being Italian and it being salt it had to be tasted. Her color and polyp extension look good!

Its currently mixing/aerating after work tomorrow I need to get a new Mg kit and I'll be posting test results. I also have some RC mixed to test as well.

RichConley - I tested 3 buckets of Reef Crystals and all were low in those 3 parameters. I found the results higher in all 3 parameters with TM ... that's why I switched in the first place.

Anyone tried the Bio Sea Marinemix salt?

I used it for about 6 months when I first started my tank. Never had any issues with it. No comment on my, "Polyp extension" either!! :D

Test results for KW, all in all I am happy. I wish the alk was higher, I am going to re tset with a different kit. All tests were done with Salifert except PH which was Neptune.

Temp 80
CA 450
ALK 7.7 dkh
Mg 1320
Po4 0
No3 0
PH 8.2
