I posted this in the breeder's forum too - because I don't know if my female's problem is due to carrying eggs or something else. This is my first pair of Mandarins and I've only had them about 4 weeks.
A couple of days ago, the female started becoming lethargic. She now has trouble even getting around the bottom of the tank and hasn't eaten in at least a day. She is in the sand in a "dip" close to the glass. She is just laying there fluttering her fins some. She is fat, but not huge by any means.
They have had plenty of copepods along with vitamin enriched baby brine over the last few weeks. Until a few days ago, she was hunting and eating fine (always slower moving more laid back than the male).
She is in such distress that I could probably just lift her out of the tank right now (she just barely seems to have the energy to stay alive). Otherwise, her color is good - no external signs other than sad eyes:-(
Anyone know if Mandarins get really lethargic before birth/spawning? Does it sound like something else internal is wrong? I need to figure out if she needs to be removed for some type of treatment. But right now, I don't know what that would be.
Thanks.
