That is really funny because I see those around occasionally. I am not talking about the red ones either but ones that look exactly like the picture.
The thing is, I doubt any fish stores will post them as lizard island variants or anything like that. That is because the wholesalers generally don't sell their fish to stores under names like that. They will have lists of different clowns and where they come from and that is usually it.
I wanted some of the Sulawesi variants of saddle clowns, the ones that are jet black, with white all around their tailfins and yellow tipped pectorail fins. I found them at a lfs just marked generic black percual clowns, which is what the wholesalers always mark them as. It took me a while to find some just like this but I did.
I think your best bet is to just call around all the fishstores in your area and have them give you a ring whenever they get melanopus clowns in.

yeah that is the problem. no lfs or even website will say all the way to exact region varient. most of the time not even country varient. lmk if you see a healthy pair around and maybe ill make it worth your time to send em up to me. ;)

im gunna talk to some of the fish stores im pretty close with the people who work at the one nearest my ouse and i might be able to get pair special ordered. but they probably cant get lizard island. but they might end up being them.

thanks for the responce

I worked at a lfs store for years and you would be surprised what people will not buy. We could get ephippium clowns, true sebaes and barrier reef clowns and stuff like that and people would never give them a second look. It is really funny because when something would come in I would think they were awesome. All customers would want is percula clowns, blue tangs and flame angels. I swear, I could open a fish store and carry nothing but these fish and I would nevery run out of business. Good luck trying to find these.

I doubt they will sell them as lizard island variants. your best bet is to get them to try and order them out of australia or look on clownfish.org to find someone who is breeding them and has some exactly like this.

you can get ones v similar here in bangkok but the large females seem to go a deep brown purply colour its only the males and you adolescents that have that striking pattern good luck I hope you find some.

i know what you mean james,
i kept occ. clowns for a while. but then the beauty of cooler rarer clowns grew on me. it does sound like you could get some cool stuff. and thanks ill look on cf.org for sure.
thanks,

ad,
ive heard that if you dont keep big clowns fed with enough diverse diet there colours will fade. thats probably what you are talking about. when occ. get big then fade and loose contrast.
thanks for the info,
