*Need Help (Pics)*

i would put some (at least 15) turbo snails and bunch of emerald crabs in the tank. i had a similar problem and they cleaned everything like a charm.

I just spent 3 hours cleaning the tank.... wow!

Where do you guys throw all the algae out??

Lucky for me I have a sewer grate on the road, but if you didn't?

Re-arranged some rock work while I was at it... moved the GSP to the middle of the tank higher up... we'll see how she looks in a couple days once things have settled down.

Oh WOW... sorry to see that... that's a one **** of an algae "cycle" if I've ever seen one.

Manual removal... daily... Turn off the pumps when you do it, then run filter socks for a few hours when you're done. Pack that fuge with macro. Start exporting the nutrients that are fueling the algae. I didn't see a skimmer listed, but you may need to beef it up as well. If you're running GFO... you need to be "Johnny on the Spot" with changing it out once it exhausts, and you're probably going to be exhausting it quickly early on.

Also... Tangs/Rabbitfish although they won't eradicate or solve your algae problems can certainly help keep it at bay once you trim down that lawn, as well as Turbo Snails. You may even be in the "Sea Hare" territory... although housing one long term isn't the best idea. I believe our club had one that used to get passed around to help out guys with algae outbreaks.

Also, what's your photo period? Reducing it may be a good idea as well.

Tswifty. Good to see you again. Been a few months.

Photoperiod is 12 hours total.. 4 hours "day".

I ripped out 85% of it tonight and also re-arranged the rocks a bit. Will post pictures for a comparison soon. Be sure to see the update!

What are those two blue-green corals you have? One looks like a hammerhead, but I've never seen one with those colors. The other looks more like a blue-green bubble coral, but not. I really like both of them.

Why is my frogspawn so weird looking? It doesn't have lots of small tentacles like a "normal" one.

The polyps are massively inflated, almost looks like a bubble coral. Mine does that when it's filter feeding, but I don't think they've ever gotten that inflated. Also, you say it is green with pink tip, but the photo shows green with blue tip. If it's just the camera, nevermind, but I was hoping those are the real colors.

Picture looks green and pink to me? One of us has bad eyes :D

The polyps on the frogspawn are always that huge... what's going on??

this is a typical tank which was not ready, thats all

What do you mean "not ready"? It had gone through it's cycle in a couple months but the algae slowly kept creeping up on me even with ro/di and weekly water changes.

I'm not going to wait a year before i put a fish in it:rollface:

FWIW... I don't find that outbreak typical at all. I've set up multiple tanks and never gone through an outbreak like that.

The only thing that closely resembles it, was a bryopsis outbreak I had in a frag tank at one point.

What type of skimmer are you using?

I have a LifeReef SVS2-24. It seems to always be foaming... although I don't see that much skimmate pulled out? The problem is that if I were to get another skimmer, it would have to sit on the glass-stand i siliconed into my sump now for the lifereef, or be an external one on a table next to the sump.

The stand may work for more than just that skimmer... most skimmers are recommended to operate within 6-10" of water. Also, silicone isn't that hard to remove, and can be peeled off with a razorblade relatively easily.

If you're not getting a lot of skimmate... especially after 8 months... and especially with all that algae... I would definitely question the skimmer.

Take a look at the Marine Solutions MSX-200 or 250

and so it begins... :bounce1:

Will keep you posted... going to change about 20 gallons in a few minutes.

Is that the skimmer you use? I remember you having an AquaC that kept overflowing.. still remember that one post of you running downstairs at 3am to a flood LOL

Yeah I hated that AquaC

I used the MSX-160 on my 90g tank... but that's about the max size tank I would use the 160 on.

I just did a quick search on the MSX and it seems to be a replica (cheaper) of the ATI Bubble Master... got good/bad reviews? What's your take?

Yep... it's hands down the best skimmer for the money.

sjm817 did some side by side testing, and the MSX outperformed his ATI.
