please point me to the proper thread or assist with pics please..
thanks in advance

If you have enough water in the tank to go into the overflow, then all you have to do is make sure you don't let the pump run dry in the sump. But it is important that the amount of water pumped back up to your tank can be flowed back into the overflow. (outflow and inflow need to be balanced)

STARTING THE OVERFLOW BOX

STARTING THE OVERFLOW BOX

If I understand the question correctly you need to make sure that there is no air in the siphon tube. You can do this by putting a piece of air line up in the syphon tube and sucking the air out until the flow starts. Incert the tubing from the drain side and make sure the water level in the pre filterbox and drain box never drops below the mouth of the syphon tube. The water level in the drain side can be maintained by using a cup of some kind. At any rate thats how its done with an Eshopps overflow box. Hope this helps.

Eshopps Overflow Boxes
Directions for Use
Assemble the parts making sure that the water exits from the Intake Box through the U-tube and into the Pre-filter Box.

The siphon is started by first filling the aquarium until water flows into Intake Box. Then carefully fill the Pre-filter Box with a cup or two of water. Suck the air out of the U-tube using clear airline tubing (1 ft) until the U-tube is full of water. This is done by bending the airline and inserting it into the U-tube. Be sure the ends of the U-tube are fully submerged so that no air can enter. You may need to add more water to the boxes as you do this. The siphon is now primed and water will automatically reach an even level in both boxes.

NOTE: No air must be allowed to enter the U-tube if the siphon is to be maintained.

If the level of water in the aquarium increases, it will enter the Intake Box and will then siphon into the Pre-filter Box. The water level in the Pre-filter Box will rise until the water flows into the Exit Tube where it will empty into the sump. The main water pump in the sump will then return the water back into the aquarium and continue this cycle. As with any overflow system, it is critical to maintain constant water levels by means of a top-off system or by regular top offs.

Just as a side note here...make sure you have a working water level in your sump. There will be evaporation and if the water level in your sump drops below your pump inlet you could burn up a pump. Also the water level in your sump has to be low enough to accomidate any power outage you may experience. Meaning if the power goes out the amount of water in your plumbing and the water that is back siphoned from your return line. Just a little FYI.

ZIGGY'S RIGHT! oops! caps off but ya be sure to have ample water in the sump. Your water level in the sump will rise when the power goes out if there is not a backflow preventer in the pump return line. don't worry about the drain line because when theres no water going in it won't come out.
