Need help with my refratometer calibration

Hey guys and gals , I am trying to track down a possible problem with my tank params and I want to make sure my Refractometer is calibrated right.

I have the pinpoint salinity monitor 53.0mS calibration fluid that came with it. ( this is the same one that I bought in teh group buy )

With the Cali fluid on the tool what should it be displaying ?

If you want come on over.
;)

To calibrate a refactormeter just put ro/di water on it and then set the unit to 0 with the screw.

That's it

lol I might have some more params for ya to test for lol

My xenias have been going down hill and trying to get to the bottom of it.

So is the stuff in the bottle the same thing ? If so , why are my fish alive ? When I used it , it shows a reading of 1.024. Just not sure why i have the calibaration fluid. When I tested the water it showed 1.022 which is alittle low I know trying to bring it back up to normal after the last water change the other night my water was a bit high at 1.026

Gonna go make some ro/di to check it out but if anyone can tell me how to use this calibration fluid would be much appercated.

Not too sure about calibrating with a real number rather than 0
RO/DI should only take 5 seconds to get enough water
;)

The Cal fluid is for electronic not normaly used for Refrac.

1.024 dead on with ro/di water so the sg is clearly not the problem lol

The only thing I can think of is that it is either the temp flux or that High ALK we found the other day when i brought that frag over since Phos , Ph , SG , Calc ,Nitri , Nitra are all with params.

Just discouraging when you see 3 of 5 xenia looking rough but everything else it looking good.

Ya dont think it could be my in tank fuge with the macro do ya ? only thing i can think of... grrrrr man this hobby can be frusterating !!

After Reading some stuff I don't think it's the Alk. I found a few people that run their Alk at like 11.

I've heard that xenia really like "dirty water" and don't do well in Super clean sterile water??

Hmm I will turn down my PS for a few days and see if there is an improvment then. was going to do some reading up on them tonight as well

Steve,

I have an interesting story to share with you. Sad, but perhaps helpful. All of my Xenia have now died - every one of them (and I had a nice collection started). The other day I was up late and realized I had not dosed in awhile due to changing over to my new tank. I typically use Kent liquid supplements and have the ingredients to make about a 5 gallon container of top off that I lace with the supplements and it keeps things running smooth. I include things like Iodine, Magnesium, Strontium, Reef Builder, Calcium and trace. Well becuase my RO unit takes too long to fill up the 5 gallon bucket and I was tired, I said what the hell and dosed the supplements directly.

Mind you I have not dosed in awhile so my naive and sleep deprived mind thought I should 'make up for it.' by adding a little extra to get the params back in order. Well a day later, all my xenia curled up and soon died. I am almost certain it was the Reef Builder (alkalinity) because I really laid it on. All of my other corals are doing great, but xenias are particularly sensitive to alk changes and of course paid for my foolishness. So although your Alk may be good on a test, what it does not tell you is how fast it got there. The rate of change is what did me in.

I also hear it works the same for Iodine with Xenia particularly, but for me it was the Alk.

Hope this helps!

A lesson hard learned

That sux.
I killed most my xenia with a dumb tank boil blonde moment back in Dec.
Got the tank to 95 and lost my shrimp, and SPS too
;(

HMmmm i bet this is the reason now that you shared your experiance as well. I was using the coral builder but since my ALK was high I have laid off and in fact 2 of the groups have started coming back.

Glad you figured it out and will agree that is probably what it is, Xenia is the proverbial "canary in the coal mine".....and is very sensitive to shifts in params especially to Alk.......
