Need help with pest coral

Has anyone been able to eradicate blue clove polyps from their tank? The thing is starting to take over my tank.

I've tried boiling water but I think it just ****es it off. Next thing I'm going to try is either Joe's juice or kalk paste.

Any advice?

is it stinging stuff? I have never seen it become a real problem, as it doesn't seem to irritate anything i've had it in contact with.

I had them in a tank and they would grow like wildfire and then be wiped out by a brown jelly protozoan infection like clockwork. In a couple months, they'd be back in force and then bam, brown jelly again.

Every person I know that has those regrets ever having them.

Yep. I like them, but I also like seeing other corals and sometimes even live rock and other critters. The tanks I've seen have been completely covered by them.

I think its a lost cause.

**I've used purple reef putty to smother ugly brown palys and what not so you can try that if the area isn't super huge.

Lost cause? Dude it's too early to shut my tank and give up!

hehe I guess I meant you may want to think about removing your clove infected live rock, but slowly... one by one over time till most of its gone so as to not mess with the bacterial load. Then putty, glue, peel the rest of it off. Not sure there is any other way.

No never give up on the reef tank!

Pictures would help, lets see 'em.

Doesn't sting stuff. Just showing up everywhere. They look nice but don't want it on every rock in my tank.

Just let it go. From the sound of it, your tank is young and plenty of change will happen. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, especially in reef tanks. Their population will self regulate in time, I guarantee it.

I see threads about these 'taking over tanks' all the time but I have yet to see a single picture, or really hear a solid caveat to them. Would you rather the nutrients they are binding with their growth be used for say, Bryopsis or cyano? :)

I'll attach a picture tonight. I'm not saying it HAS taken over my tank, I'm saying it's starting to.. so it's really not that bad yet. Still I did the faux rock walls and taking out the rock isn't an option at this point.

You could always use a coral to sting it away. A lot of people use hammers and torches (the corals, not the tools) to get rid of nasties as they are pretty potent stingers.

I have used a torch to burn up some aptasia before:rollface: outside of the tank in case you were wondering:lmao:

I want to see pictures of these things 'taking over'. I would think it'd look pretty awesome.

Like I said above, I hear it all the time, but have yet to see it. Pics or it didn't happen.

LOL sounds like my mushroom problem. I'm going to try to build an aiptazer. I bet that would work on cloves too.

Lanny, I'll try to post up a pic of my beloved shroom garden =(

I have seen plenty of tanks overrun by shrooms. They pack a potent sting and are incredibly prolific.

I want to see a tank overrun by the blue cloves. They have absolutely no sting as far as anyone can tell, and are stung by nearly everything. They only grow about 2mm off the substrate, so they can hardly touch anything, let alone sting or smother it.

Randy, run a search on nr. I HAVE seen pictures/threads there of
These polyps taking over. In my tank they were growing off of the rocks and onto the sandbed and up the glass panels.
I scraped most of them off of the glass and sometime later the rest disappeared. It could be because around the same time I stopped keeping fish
in my tank, reducing the nutrients. Who knows?

I have zoas growing onto the sand and glass, but I would hardly say they are taking over. I am off to NR to try and find these pictures. I'll post 'em here if I can manage.
