I put some rock I picked up on the beach on hatteras island in a 75 that's cycling recently. The rock is a gray tan-ish color. It looks like it has fossilized corals and shells in it. It looks very good in the tank. Anyway it didn't affect water parameters so I added all of it except 2 15 pounds pieces (about 70 pounds) to the 75. Lately I've been noticing some of the "filament" on the rock have been growing. One of the rocks I found is covered in a coarse algae/plants. It resemblems hair algea but is very coarse and each strand is about the size of a bristle on a brush. That's starting to grow and expand. The clump of strands is about 3 inches long now. I saw longer strands at the beach however. Lately I've noticed little red balls in these things. Not sure what it is exactly but it looks like some sort of seed pod. Any idea what this is and the red pods could be?
The other question and my main question is... Mostly all of the rocks had these "bristles" on them. They are basically clear with a slight tan tinge to them. They look like the other green algae on the rock but they are thicker, shorter, and clear. The are not =covering the rock as much as the green stuff is however. Just in certain places there will be 5-20 strands of it coming out of the rock. I only kept one peice of rock submerged during the transport home (the chunk with the green strands of algea on it). The other rock was soaked in freshwater for about 17 hours and then placed in the tank. Well recently I've been noticing these clear strands of stuff are growing. I mean I can each day see that it's longer. It's up to about an inch now. It's still clear and growing out of the rock. Any idea what it is? The only plants I found attached to the rocks at the shore line were kelp (red calperu kelp I believe from my unproductive internet search). These rocks that I found however had been washed into the beach and were among some rocks that were put down for erosion purposes. They were out of the water when I found them however a local fisherman said that area is underwater at high tide. Any idea what they could be?
I don't have access to a digi cam at the moment but I will pull some off of the 2 big chunks of rock that didn't make it to the tanks and scan them. I'll also dry out some of the green hair algae lookinf stuff and scan that also. Maybe that will help. Any help would be great... Thanks in advance.
As a note the tank this is in is lighted by 3 blue actinic 40 watt bulbs and 3 50/50 40 watt tritons. If I can get an ID on this and it's desirable I'd like to place it in some of my other saltwater tanks with PC, VHO, and MH lighting.
The First is the green plant/algea that has been growing and spreading on the rock I kept submerged when I picked it up. For size comparison the little patch I pulled off would cover half of a playing card.
The second is the is the stuff that's on almost every rock I got at the beach. It's growing on all of the current rocks in my tank. Even after the freshwater soak. It's not all over the rock but just in spots. The pic below is of some of it taken from the 2 big rocks I am keeping in my closet. They are completely dry and I noticed this stuff wasn't as populated as it was when I found the rock. For size comparison this would barely cover a dime.
