need lots of sand

How soon do you need it? My brother gets it when he is on the east coast and may be able to get some for here when he comes down or when I see him at the end of march.

Wayne, have him bring me about 200 pounds, too (hell, I'll take 6 50 pound bags...). I've got a 180 coming up soon;).

There might be enough interest right here to order a pallet from HD or Lowes. I've heard if you have enough buyers for a whole pallet they will get one for you........never tried it though.
Chris

I would be in for at least 200 lbs if HD will order for my big tank in my dreams. I could also take a few hundred pounds to use up a compleate pallet if need be for a big sand box deal if it comes in at the regular price of southdown at other Home depos.

i made up my mind to just get the Quickcrete Playsand from home depot. i have been researching and i really dont think it will be that big of a deal. plus its really cheap. im just putting fish in the tank anyway. i will keep everyone posted on how it goes

Isn't that stuff Silica based? I heard that Silica based sands can cause Diatom blooms one after the other.
just be sure and check the label.

Well, chemically it is the same as the glass the tank is made out of so maybe the glass is causing the diatom bloom. :D

See here: http://www.reefs.org/library/article/r_toonen9.html

Well thats just ridiculous. after reading that same statement in several other threads regarding this debate, are you now passing that off as your own scientific findings?

I'm not saying that you can't do it, or that it hasn't been done sucessfully. only that an Argonite based sand would yield better results.
Since we are exchanging links, here you go.

Okay. Let's just agree to disagree. In my experience I haven't had any more diatom blooms with silica than with aragonite and I have used both. I don't claim to know everything about silica sand, just passing on what I have read.

i have been looking around and cant find a considerable amount of negatives that would make me shy from it. many, not all, but many of the cases of diatom breakouts that i have read about using the sand occur very early in tank setup (ususally around a month or so). doesnt matter what you use when your tank cycles that happens anyways. i have seen very few articles that complain of diatiom outbreaks after the tank is well ESTABLISHED. my main concern is, is it ok to use in a tank and the answer is yes regardless of which articles you read. bottom line is i can put sand in my tank for less than 20 bucks versus 200+.

Mike, I'm no sand expert either. I just take in what I read, and learn from my expriences. then pass it on so that others can make an educated decision on what will work best for them.
I'm not trying to disagree with anyone either, just providing info.

Yo DOO DOO, I would not go that route it I were you. yes, it is very much the same as the glass, but created and formed thru a different process that when in the form that shapes our tank it is harmless. I have heard stories of the use of non araganite sand being used and having to remove it all because of the silicates. that quickcrete sand is mainly used as a concrete additive.

on a side note, I didnt tack down those fire and ice zoos I got from ya and the got knocked off by a snail and fell behind all my rock work. due to work, I was unable to rescue them for about 2 weeks and they are now gonners. :-( Maybe at the next meeting I can get some from ya.
