Need some advise. SPS looking bad.

Ive searched RC for info and kinda came up empty handed so to speak. Here's the low down, a few weeks ago I had a long visit from the infamous cyano. At this time all of my coral (sps & lps) were looking great. Best ever as a matter of fact. I decided to run some new gfo and it knocked the cyano down pretty good. (faded my sps a bit as it has in the past but nothing too severe) Now im not sure if it was the gfo or a different salt (RS coral pro) that has gotten my corals very upset. All of my monti's have checked out except for one which is looking great. My hammer coral is absolutely looking great also, however my candycane is shriveling up. One birdsnest has died while the other one looks ok. My millies and another acro(??) are showing what looks like burnt tips which is slowly getting worse. Red planet and tricolor look better than they usually do. I have since quit running the gfo about 2 weeks now and all parameters look good and are spot on throughout the day. Can anybody tell me why some of my coral are suffering while others are looking better than they ever have?

130 long, dosing 2 part, cal:420, alk:9.5-10, mag:1350-1360,
phos: 0.02(hanna checker)
nitrate: 0-5.

when was the last large water change. I find it amazing what 2-3 large water changes over the period of about 2-3 weeks will do.

After you make sure your parameters are where they are supposed to be, and you have inspected for pests, get some new water in there.

I havent done any large water changes in some time. I have normally been doing 20 gallons at least every week and a half to two weeks. I have been hesitant to do another water change since trying the new salt but I am due for one so probably tomorrow. I thought maybe the new salt might have thrown off my parameters but it hasnt. Can changing salt brands have this effect on sps (burnt tips)? I will be going back to reef crystals or the regular IO salt.

I experienced something similar back in August while using red sea pro salt. Montis were the first to go and birdnest stn. Parameters were good and stable. Did a 20% water change with IO and the next day everything looked alot better. Now using RC, SPS that STN have fully recovered. No clue, what was wrong with RSCP, because everything checked out fine.

Try a few water changes with a different brand and see if you notice any changes.

I plan to do a water change tomorrow. The water i have mixing is probably 1/3 coral pro (what i had left over) and 2/3 IO. Really hope that helps. Thanks for the info and I will post an update.

I have heard about others having problems when switching brands of salts. I have always used IO, and have never had any problems so I have never tried to switch to another brand

I had a similar experince after switching to seachem reef salt and running gfo. Some corals were looking better while others died or browned out. The change was too fast for them and ultimately shocked the system.

whats wrong is that it has an alk that hover around 15dkh! Ever wonder why your mixing bucket would be stark white after making a batch? I threw the bucket out after testing its parameters. And I thought RC mixed high in alk!

You're right, the bucket I have does measure pretty high. My RC measure around 10dkh. But, still I don't think high alk. was the case, the tank was stable at 9dkh even after a water change.

I got a bucket of that horrible salt and it mixes super dirty with a chalk film on the suface. I contacted them followed all steps like mixing the bag, mixing salt for 24 hours and it junks my mixing powerheads and is probably the worst salt i have ever used. I love to try difrent salts and rs coral pro is the worst

Well I am surprised to see results only 24 hrs after a water change. My candy cane is looking almost 100% again. Its inflated, not shriveled up, and appears to be trying to feed a little. Havent seen it do that since everything went down hill. Pretty sure there is no hope for a few sps but there is noticeable improvement already.

Yeah, I hear it is normal for salt mixes with high calcium levels. But, the cal. in my RC bucket tested out a lot higher than the RSCP, yet it leaves no residue like RSCP does.

Dun2run, I think we've hit a bad batch. I really like RSCP, it mixes very well and relatively affordable. But, from the results I got, I don't think I will ever try red sea again.
