Need some answers

I have a pakbak skimmer hanging on the back of my tank, I have a powerhead that I can't read the brand cause it had been washed out. I curently have a clarkii clownfish with a haitian anemone, a white/black stripes damsel, a yellow damsel, and a blue damsel.

crush coral is not the greatest sand bed. It is difficult to clean, and as a result dirties up quickly. It can also trap nitrates and phosphates easily causing possible algae and cyano problems
It can also trap nitrates and eventually release them back into the water column.

in my experience, the best rock is from someone breaking their tank down.

just look in local reef club website for "moving soon" or "tank breakdown" or "tank for sale".

post will you part out and state what you want, if they dont sell the whole tank, you are 1st in line...

i usually mix their established rock with some fresh good quality lr.

never had a algae breakout, tank cycled in a week...........
 
Just go through craigslist and stuff everyday and youll find a great deal on rock. I bought 100lbs of cured fiji live rock from a guy tearing down his tank for about 1.50 per pound.

good find---but-----make sure he didn't use any copper based medications at any time in his tank

for a sand base buy new med grade argonite--don't use old sand, its just not worth it.
One cup of sand from an established tank is all you need to seed it.

is it possible to change crush coral bed into a live sand bed ? btw, how to do u vaccuum the crush coral ? thank you every one that helps me and give me advice in this thread...

i went your route....and bought about 30 lb of base rock and 45 of live rock...even after a year and a half....the base rock which is not all at the base is dark green and ugly while the other stuff is turning purple.

not to mention that the ive rock looks like rock and the base rock is not as porous and it just looks like rocks that fell off a cliff.
 
Be very careful if you buy LR off the internet. I did and I got a ton of aiptasia in it that I am still trying to get rid of. I am also having a problem 4 months after I set up my tank with my params going crazy. On vacuuming the crushed coral I just stick my little hose thing up to it let it get some in the thing them lift it back up about an inch. It takes out a ton of nasties from the snails directly outside. Also please do like Capn said and cure it outside your tank otherwise where ever you have you tank is gonna stink like mad. Good luck where ever you get your LR.
 
I'm noy buying liverock on the internet, I'm buying it from a guy that sells coral and livestocks.. I just contacted him and he said he will let me handpick the LR, so can U guys post some pics of a good fiji LR. btw, his live rocks are cured.

if you dont see it yourself, it is a crapshoot.


lr is a shady buisness, i go to premium, which has the best lr around...

they sometimes get below standard.....

the problem is the companies get what they are sent, they dont get to look at it first. then based on apperance charge accordingly.


when i was looking for lr i checked all the deals online,

took my time bought local.

only took 2 weeks, you would be suprised at how many people sell their tanks, move, or downgrade thei tanks

Yes and probably a good idea to change it out

Vacuum a quarter of it up and replace with medium grade argonite. Repeat on three consecutive weeks until you are done.
Do not disturb the reef rock--don't worry about the substrate under it.

Get yourself a 4 foot piece of 2 inch pvc and glue a large funnel on the end of it. Use this to replace the crushed coral as you vacuum it up. this will allow you to direct it to the bottom of your tank without a big sandstorm

Also suggest in investing in a small portabel wet/vac--great for these kind of jobs and vacuuming out the sump etc ect--this one costs 25 bucks

I just got the LR, and Dry Fiji rock today... The guy let me hand pick it just like he said I could... My fish love it, they are now hiding in the caves. I bought 2 Dry fiji rock( which is LR but they dry it up) and about 20lbs of Premium Fiji LR. The LR is cured so I just rinse it with fresh saltwater and put it in the tank. The guy tell me to rinse the Dry rock with RO/DI water for about 30 minutes and then put it in the tank.
