need some help. Not getting the results I want

25% weekly water changes is excessive especially for a new tank and light bio-load. I would cut that back. If you want to go weekly try 5 to 10%. Or monthlyish around 20%.

Here is a question I just thought about. Didn't want to start another thread.

Currently, I am having a lot of space issues in my 20gal long sump.... I am thinking about doing a refugium in an aux 10 gal tank. Would I just be wasting my time or would my tank actually benefit from this? I currently have 2 decent size clumps of chaeto but am running out of room with the skimmer, reactor, and the live rock rubble.

Is a 10g charro refugium worth it? That depends on what you are expecting out of it.

What size is the connected display tank?

The general consensus is that "small" refufiums may not be all that effective in nutrient reduction but useful as a breeding ground for copepods and other micro life. It's also nice to have if you need a place to store a misbehaving fish or invert.

For maximum nutrient export potential, a macro algae refugium needs light hitting as much surface area of the macro algae as possible. That's why some advanced systems are engineered to have a tumbling ball of chaeto algae. You need enough light and growing room to produce and then export a decent amount of algae for best results.

It is a 55 gal display. I also have a 30 gal tank that I was thinking of using or possibly buying another 20 Long since petco is having their $1 per gallon sale. I have seen some threads where people actually used the refugiums as displays as well and put mangrove and other stuff in there. I am considering this route because I don't have the room under my stand due to the sump. that way it isn't a huge eye sore. Lighting wouldn't be a huge issue.

Do you want a planted tank?
It's by no means necessary, and you're already running a fair amount of nutrient export. GFO, carbon, skimming, dsb, and macro is not a simple operation. IMO it would be better to slow down, learn how to test your water properly and do some more research. Just see how your tank does. The risk is that you'll end up with a complicated system where you don't know what, if anything, is beneficial / detrimental.

I'd get straight on the basics first, the $1/gal sale happens a few times a year.

Thank you for all of your help. I would like a planted tank if I went the remote fuge route but you are right. I should just slow down and learn my tank before getting more complicated.
