Need some help with reef tank setup

I don’t see diatoms or Cyano. I see a normal progression of cycling.

When should I do my first 10% water change? My tanks been going for a little over a month

I would say you can start water changes at any time as long as your cycle is complete. I've currently got a 40 gallon breeder, 10 gallon sump and 5 gallon refugium. I only do 5 gallon water changes every 2 weeks.

Added a hi fin red banded goby , candy cane pistol shrimp and two coralline covered snails yesterday. Ready to see how they’ll be when they’ve settled into their new home

I bought a hammer coral from LFS and got it into my tank after acclimating yesterday evening. It was starting to open back up and my peppermint shrimp came and started ( cleaning / eating ) it and it retracted everything back into itself. It has some polyps sticking out a tiny bit as of this morning. Do y’all think the peppermint shrimp was eating it and killed it? My buddy said give it a week and see how it does

Never mind , I moved the coral by my caves and it’s starting to open back up. So maybe the peppermint shrimp was just cleaning it since it was new to his tank. I’m guessing the flow was to high where I originally placed it

Tank is doing great!! Got cope pods all over the bottom of the glass like krazy!! I’ve got seven coral frags in my tank now. A rock flower anemone , two different types of mushrooms , two different types of zoanthids , a acan and my hammer. I had two wave makers going but I just turned one off within the last thirty minutes. I figured two was kinda overkill. The one I left on can be adjusted and has different modes. Anyone have any tips on on I should set my wave maker? It’s a Hygger cross flow wave pump HG070 - 12 W and thank you in advance!!

I don't have any experience with the cross flow wavemakers. I use regular Jebao pumps. I'm sure someone will chime in though.

Are they capable of syncing with one as master and the other slave? If so, I’d say run them in classic wave maker mode mounted at opposite ends of the tank. When one turns on, the other turns off.

I actually changed my flow pattern recently to something far more old school, and I’m loving the results. I don’t have the gyre style pumps, mind you. My pumps are facing directly towards each other from opposite ends of the tank. Rather than syncing them, they operate independently and are set to random flow.

The new one is but I don’t think the old one is. It’s just got an outlet plug and a on / off switch. I’ve got it set on classic wave pulse mode now and set to 45%.

Sounds like you’ve got a lot of experience with wave maker placement and settings. I bet it does make you tank a killer eye attraction with how you’ve got your flow if you have a bunch of coral in there

My current setup is too young to have anything really cool to speak of. I will say this, though…never try to alter or cater the flow of your aquarium to appease a particular/new coral. The exact opposite is true for successful tanks. Create a stable environment with multiple “flow zones”, and place the corals/inhabitants in their niche area. I crashed quite a few corals recently by breaking my own rule…never change the tank to suit a coral.
