Need some wiring help!!

I just purchased a 115VAC 60Hz cooling fan from radio shack and was wondering if I am ok to just wire it to a standard two prong power cord without using some kind of transformer.

I tried to use DC fans and a powersupply from an old computer but when I disconnected it from the mother board it would no longer power up. Besides, if I can use fans without another ballast/transformer to worry about hiding all the better.

You don't need a transformer.

It it is rated for 110V 60 Hz you do not need a transformer and it can be connected directly to the plug wire.
One advice though, if the fan will be mounted on a metal hood or the body of the fan is metalic like aluminum I would recomend you use a three prung plug and connect the green wire to one of the fan's mounting screws.

Although it sounds like you're moving on to the AC fan, I should point out that there are two solutions for you if you want to continue using DC computer fans. The first is to use an older, AT power supply instead of an ATX power supply. ATs did not need to be plugged in to the motherboard to power up. I ran my fans like this for a little while.

The other solution, which I just finished installing, is to get an AC/DC power pack from Radio Shack and wire it up to the computer fans. I have 2 fans rated 12V, 0.24A, so I just needed a 12v 500mA power pack and it's running great. I also left the PC power connectors inline so that I can just unplug it when the fans die, instead of tearing apart my wiring.
