I am starting a 55gal. fish and reaf tank, what protein skimmers do you guys recommand, I was looking at the octopus DBH300,
it is a dual hang on the back. Any good?

It's probably okay. Skimmers for that size system are a controversial matter. I guess the more common choices are the Remora series and the CoraLife skimmers. That's where I'd start.

Ive tried no name brands, seaclone crap, cpr and cpr aquafuge and now I have a Deltec MCE600... far surpases all I think.. Never tried a remora with a mod but...for me for what it can do.. HOB or in sump.. I think its worth it... my corals have looked a lot better ever since getting this skimmer... is it expensive yes but you get what you paid for... $500 skimmer to keep a $5000 tank looking good is worth it.

Ive got this one and am completely happy with it on my 55 gallon Red Sea Prizm Deluxe Protein Skimmer Aquaruim Hang-on its rated on many sites as a top 10 or 5 skimmer. This one comes with the surface skimmer and shipped costed me less than $100.

I agree I have the same deltec skimmer well worth the money. It is one of the only things I did right with the tank.

I have a Remora Pro with Mag 3 HOB skimmer fro my tank and i like it. It's by far the easiest skimmer I have ever used. It's as close to set it and forget it as I've ever seen.

You know, the Mag isn't what produces the noise on the Remora. It's the bubbles in the actual skimmer that produce a noise. I had to mod it a bit with some styrophome to cut down the noise. That helped.

But ya, I wouldn't say it was the Mag 3 that made the noise, but the bubbles inside the actual skimmer.

I've got the Remora with MJ1200 and LOVE it. It's silent. A little noisy until it broke in...which took a couple of days. Now I have to look to make sure it's on...lol.

If you want something that actually skims well, look at the Deltec MCE600, or the Tunze DOC 9010. The Deltec is the best HOB around, and one of the few that are actually any good. The Tunze is an "in tank" skimmer, but is small and doesn't take up too much space. People have also been reporting good results with the dirt cheap D&D Typhoon.

I just did a test on mj1200 which is hooked up to a CPR, turn it off and also turn off the air and 90% of the noise from the tank dissapeared... had to literally stand beside the MCE600 to hear it.

I have a Remora and I HATE it, pre skimmer box is crap and flops around, bad design IMO....I'm thinking of picking up a Deltec...

I have an excalibur on my 55 and it works great. I get a ton of gunk out a week. Real dark coffe colored stuff too. I think I spent 110 on it.
