Where would you guys suggest getting a rodi filter, like a hardware store?

Also on skimming what are your thoughts on the hob models?

And as far as sumps go, I am cramped for room. The stand has bars on the side with a small cabinet in the middle. Maybe 15-16in. So do you think a tall sump would work? All the sumps I have seen seem like a long model aquarium tank. That is a bigger foot print and less height. So would do you guys think, it'd have to be nearly opposite. Tall with a small foot print.

The RO untis at Lowes and Home Depot are a joke, don't get them.

An RO/DI unit is only as good as the filtration it offers. There are often good untis available for sale on the selling forums here on RC. Jsut replace the prefilters (minimal cost) prior to using, and ensure with the seller on how many gallons they ahve made. A membrane (the expensive part) can handle up to 10,000 gallons of average tap water before needing replacement if it is cared for.

For new, there are many opinions. My choice is the Bulk Reef Supply series. They are economical, yet use very good filtration from .6 micron to 5 micron.

there are less expensive model from Air Water Ice and others that are cheaper, but come with less efficient filters.

If money is not an object, Spectrapure has good filters (but they are expensive). I get 0 TDS water from my BRS system at 50psi...thats a good unit.

If you find a cheap used system that has at least 2 prefilters, the membrane, and a DI conister you can get it and replace the filters with almost whomevers you want. Canister sizes are pretty much standard industry wide.

I'll make it short and sweet. Get yourself a RO/DI Unit it's one of the fastest ways to save money in the begining stages of this hobby. I think its about 5.99 a jug at the critter. Once you get a unit and buy your own salt figure up how much it cost for a jug then. I assure you its alot cheaper and your salinity will stay in line.

The one I use and the one at publixs here both say rodi filtration and uv sterilization. So I am pretty sure it's rodi I had more problems out of the critters water than I have this. At any rate I am looking for an rodi unit as we speak. So if anyone has one thy have been wanting to sale let me know.

The publix water stations I've used here and in FL have both said RO and UV - not RO/DI. RO/DI water tastes like crap and isn't something one should drink regularly.

okay i am getting an rodi unit from brs. they have a good deal going on right now for one that 75 gl/pday for like 140 and 5 free sediment filters too. So this is what I shall do before something messed up happens to my tank for using the wrong water. yes I went and double checked them today and they are just RO water.

Get the DI component as well, and that is what you need. the 75 RO/DI special.

I used a regular 10 gallon tank for my 55 gal until last week when I took it down. In other words, you can use any tank that will fit, you just need to add baffles and a way to get water back to the main tank. Your options are as wide as your imagination.

Well got the rodi unit hooked up and am mixing my own salt water with. Hope my corals appreciate it I am sure they will. How do you know when to change the filters

Most important, measure the TDS on a regular basis. If it goes up from 0... time to replace the pre filters.

Flush the membrane weekly to make it last as long as possible. The DI should change color when it is ready to be replaced... if not, replace when TDS climbs to measurable.

Those are some broad things to do... I am sure others will chime in with more.

Well I am buying this used so I am nit sure what any of these filters are suppose to look like so can I replace them from ones at lowes or do I need to go somewhere else to get filters. How do you flush the membrane.

The most economical place Is who ever has them on sale, BRS has pretty good prices all the time but during group buys Is when I stock up on those kinds of things. SpectraPure was running a sale right now If It Is still on. The Pre filters should be changed every 6 months at least, The DI when It's not producing 0 TDS water, The Membrane usually lasts around 3 yrs depending on how much use It gets. It's pretty easy to care for once you understand how they work. Hope this helps and no I would not buy at Lowe's, Sam's club had a deal on the pre filters 20.00 for 2 sediment 2 carbon and one I think Chlorine type filter or Silica can't remember. Kinda easy access so I bought a pack.
