Need Water ASAP

I have always had the glass cover on.Stupid I guess but I thought enough surface aggitation was enough. If I take it off I'd seriously be worried about a jumper. Maybe I could cover it with eggcrate. If you have no lid do you have to worry about stuff getting in like dog hair, dust, etc?

Any dust that gets in my tank gets skimmed. I don't recommend running a glass top either. I see cat hair get in from time to time, no worries here though.

Yes you do have to worry about jumpers. Don't you see all the other animals I have? Do dog hair gets in it, yes it does. It usually gets caught in the filter part where I have to clean every time I do a water change. What fish do you have??? Best to get a canopy on it and then cover the back with netting to prevent jumpers! I have not done that yet myself, but I will once I get the new tank setup.

I, like you, use to buy my water from the critter. But j just seemed to always have problems with their water. Switched about a year ago to mixing my own and have not had a problem since with water. It's fairly easy to do. Just buy some salt use RODI water and add the appropriate amount of salt to get the salinity you want. It will be
ore than what the package recommends cause they don't mix to 1.025 I think they just mix to 1.021-1.022 or something. It will save you a lot of time and money in then end. Hope this helps.

Better yet, go get yourself an RO/DI. Danny's 220 selling thread here has a 50gpd ro/di with dual tds meter for $75. He also has salt for sale. For around $100 you could get a bucket of salt and RO/DI and you know your water is good and save money in the long run.

Well, for what it is worth, as soon as I find a suitable container at a reasonable price fpr my water (100 gall) I will be seeilng my 35 gal storage container. It's awesome, but too small now for all my tanks.

that he didn't mention! Lol@myself. Ro/di filter aren't really that expensive or hard to setup. I need to buy new filters for mine but I was not happy with my last purchase at airwaterice. They told me it's the same b one that came with my system but it's not and the filter does not last long nor did it ever give me 0 Tds. Original filters did though.

You must have a high water and electric bill! I see how much my bill increases each time I add something new. Been watering my new garden and it increased about half.

With that 220all the nano and the 180 and your oscar tank and I know I missed some. Andy you may need 2 100gal container. Lol how did you do it with a 35g container.

Well, the freshwater tanks you don;tuse RO/DI water. It is more harmful. If you do use it, you have to buy somplements to put the minerals back in..jsut tap water and chlorine treatment works for the 200gallons of fresh I have.

The 180 I keep a 5gallon ato on, and one of the nano's I ahve a 2.5 gallon ato on. the thris nano has a lid and does not evaporate much..LOL..so every week I make 35 gallons for top off, and have a 45 gallon brute can for making saltwater.

You might be a good candidate for my 35gal container Zef..after all, you are soon to be the proud owner of a large tank welcome to my world hehe

Yeah I use a 55gal container (I don't fill it up but soon I will lol ) to mix my salt and 4 critter jugs for ato. Thanks away.

actually I do buy RODI water from walmart 30 cents a gallon. Trying to buy an rodi unit from the 220 sell I am afraid though that I might have missed out on it

I have a water filter on our sink made by culligan. It is very small though, and to tell the truth not sure what it filters for. I have had the lid open on the tank most of today and last night. I closed it when I went to sleep. But I dont think much if any has evaporated. Anyway as far as fish go now there is just a maroon clown ,cherub angel, and a yellow tang. I don't know if these are jumpers but the clown has nearly shot out a few times during feeding. Would eggcrate work, as building a canopy is probably not gonna happen any time soon

It'll work, but you get the cast shadows. It's not very pleasing to look at....

It is only RO at walmart's water station!!!!! No DI at all!!! Do not use that water, I used to use that water and it cost me big time. I had problems one after another using that water.

Mikey is right.

the problem with this water is that it is luck of the draw in the quality you get. If you are lucky enough to get there right after the filters were changed, you can get some ok water. DI is better, but aquarists for years did without it. It does mean more work and monitoring.

Often enough, those machines are saturated quickly and you'll get poor water quality. Generally, in a reef tank, consistency is the key to stability. This is why so many of us invest in the gear we have. Good Ro/DI untis, excellent skimming, exceptional lighting.

Some of these things are expensive and takes time to accumulate, but an RO/DI unit is not that expensive and a key item for a new reefer. Get one as soon as you can swing it.
