Needing a good camera recommendation

Does anyone have a good camera they recommend? Something that takes some awesome macro shots? Our baby will be here any day and I think I'm going to bite the bullet and purchase a decent one.

I found the Fujifilm FinePix S602 ZOOM. It's 500 dollars before shipping though! :eek1:

That's an extreme measure, but if you know of a decent camera, or even someone selling a used one, please let me know. ;)

I'm an idiot when it comes to purchasing a new camera.

Best bet is to message Julie. She is a freaking expert on that kinda stuff, I swear. You should see some of her pictures!

Her nick is llpoolej.

Julie mainly goes DSLR... Ask her about point and shoots though... :D And tell her not to be a stranger too... ;)

IMO Nikon Coolpix take great macro's and I hear the Canon Elphs do as well... I'm not sure about the Elph's, but I've seen TONS of great macros of the Coolpix... ;) HTH

Hmm... I wasn't sure if the coolpix was a good brand or not... macros and basic "family portraits" are what I need it for. Most of my shots are up close anyway. Birds and fish... can't really see them from a distance.

The coolpix seems to be in my price range... I'm just wondering, though. Does the megapixel number really matter after it gets over 5 megapixels? I've heard that everything above that really doesn't make it take better pictures... Have you guys heard that?

Minolta was just bought out by Sony, I think. The Sony camera with the 10X or 12X zoom lens is an update of the old Minolta DiMage. I always liked that camera (before the heat of the desert got to it and killed it).

Zac,

If you want Consumer Report's ratings I can email it to you. PM me your email addy if you want it.

i REALLY LIKE MY POINT AND SHOOT kodak easyshare. Takes great everyday pics for the money. Kinda harder to get good macros through the glass in the 270 but it did decent in the 80 I had. I can send you a few favorites if you want to see the kodak quality. If you plan on doing much zooming and cropping after the pic is taken with your software is where you will benifit from a higher MP. Cameras can get crazy expensive like everything if you get caught up in all the bells and whistles. I just like to turn it on and take the shot :). I still haven't figured out my features on the point and shoot so I know I would never fool with all the other things on a more fancy shmancy number. I do know to always override the auto flash outdoors though. A lot of times dark shadows are a problem especially under a pavillion or something and the camera will not automatically flash thinking it doesn't need to. Just a little FYI ;).

Awesome links. I found a Panasonic Lumix that's 10 mp... a bit on the expensive side.. .but it looks like an SLR.

I like the coolpix brand though, and from what I've read after Randy recommended them, they seem like very good cameras. Now all I have to do is find a good place to buy them. ;)

So which Nikon Coolpix? There are so many different sets of numbers and letters trailing the Coolpix name.... P4, P500, S10, S500, L4, L12, etc., etc. :(

Link didnt work for me.

I have the Powershot A70. Original one was great. Had a problem with it inside warrenty time and they sent a refirbished. I've not been as happy with the refirb as the original. Get a tri-pod to go with it and it will be better for macros. I've bought one, but havent used it yet.

Bottom line: I'd recommend it. I loved my original one and it did much better macros than the refirb. I use mine for grand-daughter pics AND MOVIES. She's almost 3 now and loves to watch her "baby" movies on papaw's "pum-pewter"

lol. I may have to go with that one. From the reviews, they do awesome "super-macro's" from 0cm to 10cm. Sounds like it's good for everyday use as well.

imsqueak ~ ygpm.

Well Randy,

I ended up taking your advice after checking out that link. I went with a Coolpix L6, which was on sale, so that makes it even better!

IT takes some really impressive photos. I'm going to have to get used to all the settings so I can take that perfect macro, though. Does take some very nice pictures. I'll post some of the pics I've taken. I got a GREAT picture of my yellow watchman goby!
