Neon dottyback problem

Hi, I'm very new to this forum, I've had a 40 breeder reef tank for around 8 months now, haven't had an issue until this morning. My neon dottyback has some very weird looking projections on his lower jaw. It looks pretty much like little clear needles or even fiberglass shards. I just noticed it this morning and so far his behavior and the rest of his body seems normal. My SO is attempting to get him to quarantine him, but I'd love some help in figuring out what this is. I will try to get a good picture to post once we catch him if that will help. Also, we did just add 2 snails and 2 hermit crabs to the tank yesterday. Until I get a good picture, just imagine a fish with what literally looks like a little clear needle beard...that is what he looks like. If anyone has any advice, please let me know. Thank you!

From your description it sounds like the fish had a run-in with a bristleworm. If the fish is eating and otherwise behaving normal, I personally wouldn't try to catch the fish. The bristles will fall off over time.

After looking at some pictures online of bristle worm stings, that is exactly what it looks like so we will leave him in the tank since we haven't been able to catch him yet, he's a sly fish! Thanks so much for your advice, we did have a live rock a long time ago that had some worms and we removed all the ones we could, but I'm sure there are a few left. Thanks again.

Many dottybacks seem to like to eat bristle worms. My explanation though is that especially the males attack them because bristle worms may raid their nests.
I've made the observation with my marine bettas that only the males had signs of bristle worm contact but never the females.
