Hi can a single neon goby be housed in a 12g tank L19" W16" H11" ?

It will be kept with yellow stripe clingfish.

Thanks

Thank you betamed.
Ok good thats one yes :) anyone else think its fine?

One other question, would a yellow stripe clingfish (ysc) allow a neon goby to clean it? The ysc is quite thin and they are very active swimmers.

Neon gobies actually don't like each other much. They do well in a pair if they are compatible but in the long run they are very territorial so they are best kept either singly or as a mated pair. In the wild they live as a pair on a coral head and at certain times of year there are small to medium sized juveniles found on the coral head with an adult pair (probably not their own young as the larvae settle there is statistically very little chance they land on the same coral head the were hatched at) who chase the others away as they mature.

There are 9 different species of neon gobies, and not all of them clean. One group lives on coral heads and they advertise and set up cleaning stations, the other group lives in the tubes of sponges and don't clean other fish. Just an interesting fact on the group.

One, or a mated pair, should be fine in a small tank. Cleaning behavior is hit-or-miss with any individual fish. It took a few months before my tang allowed the neon goby to clean it. They're great fish. The only downside is that they are relatively short-lived. I think only about three years in nature or captivity.

I've found that the gobies who's lines come to a point like a V on their heads are cleaners. They are so fun to have in a tank or swim with.

Thats great news! Thanks for the comments and by the way I am only looking to keep one unless in the future it would be better pairing them off.

A single will be fine in that size tank imo. Sometimes DD has pairs up for sale. I would encourage to find a captive bred one. I don't know about the cling fish. Good luck.
