Neptune Systems VDM

I'm buying AI Sol leds for my 60g cube. I can either get the AI base controller or the Neptune Systems VDM Variable Speed Dimming Module. Dumb question, does the vdm module work by itself or does it have to be used in conjunction with the apex controller?

Quick thread hijack - what kind of cable connects the VDM to the sol unit? Is it the same data cable used for the sol controller? And is that cable just a standard male-male headphone cable?

Neptune sells a special cable - it's a DB9M to stereo 1/8.
