Neptune temp probe

My Apex arrived today and after hooking everything up.. first thing it beeped at me was the temp was too high and shut off my lights. At least I know that works

But... according to my 3 dollar alcohol thermometer and my Finnex heater w/ temp probe.. the neptune temp probe is reading 2 degrees higher.

The manual says it's fully calibrated from the factory. Anyone else have this problem?

My temp probe reads 2 deg. higher as well but this is on an AC Jr. It was that way new out of the box.

I found another alcohol thermometer.

1 alcohol thermometer reads 78
another alcohol thermometer reads 80
neptune reads 80
finnex heater w/ temp probe 78

...
I need a tie breaker.

If you got the Apex, the web configuration blows. You will want to use the display unit most of the time.

Get a scientific glass thermometer. I wouldn't trust the alcohol or heater temp probe. I would bet they are +- a coupole degrees.

If you are having trouble with the web browser on the Apex, then I recommend that you update the firmware to the latest version as it corrects a couple of problems. See for the firmware update:

I agree with szwab. The scientific glass thermometer's are pretty cheap. My AC3 was in line with the 3 mini-glass thermo's I have, even though the two probes are .4-.5 different.

It's not exact, but close enough. Remember, the exact temp itself isn't the end all be all variable, decent stability is. Temps are all over the place on various reefs from mid 70's to high 80's.

Thanks Curt! First thing I did (as I always do with something with an updatable firmware) was head to the website. I didn't see any firmwares on the downloads page other than the downloadable manual.

I'm going to try it out now.

I got mine, pretty much finished programming it and should be hooking it up shortly. I'll keep an eye on the temp and will post if it looks like I need to calibrate the temp probe also.

That's true...

80 degrees vs 82 degrees... if it reads 82 degrees.. is it really 84 or 80? I've let my tanks go up to 82 degrees. It accidentally went to 84 before and things didn't like it (I was on vacation of course).

My ac3 was 2* off also... i tested it against a glass therm and my older ac2 which both read the same.
