Tank On Board!

Tank On Board!

The tank (painted black) is on the stand. Now the fun of cutting holes in my floor begins. I'm doing this while the wife is at work.:( Still working on the hood.
I'm gonna solicit your advice on equipment. My tank is a 125 with a 20g refuge and 20g sump with a 10 foot head. I was thinking of this stuff:
Heaters: 2 x 250w Ebo Jaegers ($19.99ea)
Refractometer: Captive Purity 2111 ($69.00)
SCWD for CL: $38.95
Pump for CL: Mag 9.5 ($69.95)
Pump for Sump to main Tank: Mag 24 ($129.95) or Dolphin DP2000 ($139.95)
Also, do you think the Mag 9.5 can power two SCWD's with a 10ft head (400gph at 10ft)?

Thanks Dutch! Anyone else able to comment on my equip suggestions? One change: I'm only gonna use 1 SCWD, since I made some nice adjustable returns for the two overflows. Four returns (2 from overflow, 2 from SCWD) should be enough, right?

Servicing the left end of tank gonna be a bit of a pain with tank tucked against the wall. :eek2: JMO.

looks good other than that.

Think I found my Live Rock!

Think I found my Live Rock!

I think I've finally decided to order my LR from Reefermadness:cool:
I was going to order:
45lbs Fiji Premium ($153.00)
45lbs Fiji Ultra Handpicked ($227.00)
and either: 66lbs Tonga Red Branch ($316.50) or 88lbs Tonga Kaelini ($378.95).
Whaddya think:confused: Prices include shipping, plus I was going to give them a call and see if I can get an even better price!

Thanks Serge. I looked at oceansmotions, but at this point, they are a little too much $$$. I know I'm spending a ton on this already ($1100 lights, $700 LR, $1000 equip, etc...), but I'm gonna run the SCWD for now. I think to upgrade at a later date would be rather easy, and then I can used the SCWD for my future prop tank! :)

If your SCWD still works @ that time! LOL
P.S. Your welcome
Good luck with the new setup & keep the pics comming!

According to Snailmann's Skimming 101 material, that's the size skimmer I should have. Yeah, she's a big one, but I suppose you can't over-skim.

Everything is up an running....LOUDLY! My "Durso" standpipes don't seem to be functioning properly. Lots of noise. While I research other options, I'm currently restricting my overflow with the ball valves to keep it quiet.
Any suggestions?

I get the rushing sound at the top and the "hot tub" effect in the sump. I do have about a 8-10ft head, so I wonder if that's the problem? I do see other people with their sumps plumbed to the basement.

durso overflows

durso overflows

Here's where I was hoping the story would continue with a happy ending :( I have almost a exact duplicate of your system, Basement fuge,125 AGA. etc....I'm using a Iwaki 100rlt return pump. I'm having the SAME problem with noise and bubbles...billions of bubbles..in the fuge...looks like a giant skimmer :( . I have tried everything I can think of to help out but nothing seems to work right. I've made the air holes in the top of the standpipe bigger and smaller, tried combining both 1" drain pipes into a 1 1/2 pipe....no difference. Tried all kinds of different hieghts for the drain pipes.
I can turn down the flow with the ball valves (one on each pipe) until the water level rises just up to the air bleed nipple and then its perfect....no noise,no bubbles, but.....you have to baby sit it constantly because its so finely balanced between how much water is coming in and how much is going out that ANY deviation in the amount coming in will overfill the tank and vice versa...any amount of devation going out and its back to sucking and bubbles.
I wrote to AGA and their answer was to tie a filter bag to the end of the drain pipe in the fuge...well...Duhhhhhh ..Thats real high tech. Makes a great pod trap and defeats the whole purpose of the fuge plus it doesnt work either.
My next step is to scrap the AGA setup and try to buld a durso drain from his directions on his web site....about the only thing I havent tried.
If you get a solution...ANY solution....PLEASE email me ...call me...let me know somehow...I too am DESPERATE!!!!

Deforestusa: Thanks for the response, but unfortunately the issues I'm having are with the Durso. They are the exact same problems that you describe. :mad2:

I have given up on figuring this one out on my own. I'm hoping the community can help me (us). Here's the stats:

125AGA. approx 10ft head height. 2 Durso overflows (1"pvc) 3/4" return line from the sump. Having flushing, gurgglin', hot tubbin. I can screw around with the ball valves and make it quiet, but it's too touchy and dangerous :( I want to run my returns full bore!

Now, I did notice that when I just ran my SCWD from the sump, I was able to leave the valves fully open, with out issues. The pump that runs the SCWD has a much lower flow rate than the main one.
Also, I've tried just running with a straight pipe in the overflow, but that too flushes, unless I d*ck around with the ball valves.
Please....anyone....beggin'.....on my knees.....

Do you have the durso type pipes made and sold by AGA or did you make or buy the original durso pipe? I have the AGA ones that I bought with the tank. I also tried a straight pipe and had the same results as you did.....like I said..we have almost an exact duplicate of each other.
Let me know what pipes you have and if yours are the AGA type then I may try to go to Lowes and get some PVC and make a durso type to see what happens....keep me posted
I also noted that if I turn down my iwaki pumps ball valve mine works a little better too but...I too want full circulation and max water turnover.
