I just ordered a 6000 and controller - too. Where did you get them - were they in stock?

does this mean you are removing the closed loop part of your system - why the change?

Are you one with maristar fixture - how are you liking it - would you do it again?

I ordered 2 Tunze 6000 and the 7095 controller. Hopefully they'll be here this week.

ps saw your powerhead drop issue and saw this - personally, I glue all my powerheads to algae magnets so I can put them wherever I want with ease and they don't fall either

A long time ago I learned that suction cups on powerheads only work for a few weeks. I learned to build very simple acrylic brackets for these powerheads. I use strips of 1/4" or thinner acrylic, cut into 1 1/2" strips. The strips are then cut to about 12" long, or longer depending upon how deep in the tank you want the powerhead. I then make two right angle bends in the acrylic towards one end of the strip by warming the acrylic with a propane torch. You can cool the acrylic when it's in the right spot by dipping it into some water. These bends will hold the bracket onto the tank, so you will want to make them fit your tank. I use mostly Hagen powerheads, which come with small brackets for suction cups. The powerhead slips into these supplied brackets. I simply remove the suction cups and drill some holes in the acrylic bracket that line up with the holes in the supplied powerhead bracket. I then attach the supplied bracket to my custom made holder with a few nylon screws and nuts. Once in the tank, the acrylic bracket becomes completely covered in coralline algae, essentially invisible, and you never have to worry about a powerhead spinning out of control again.

Not sure, but probably. I'll have to see how the Streams work on their own. Plus, I need the space in the corner where the CL intake is for the Stream. The change is due to way too many dead spots. Also, I feel that good water movement is the last issue I haven't really addressed. I think that this is the reason I am having RTN with some of the SPS in the tank.

Yes, I have the Maristar fixture. I haven't had any problems with it. The only thing I would do different is go with 400w instead of 250w. Can never have enough light!

just wanted to chime in and tell you that the hair algae I was experiencing is now gone! I appreciate your help in letting me know how you beat your outbreak. It helped me tremendously.

I am putting a set of T5's on this weekend and I will post some pics after the bulbs break in.
 
CeeGee: Glad to hear that the algae is gone! I know how frustrating that can be.

Missing Linc: I'm changing because it appears to be a reliable way to maintain a sucessful, high color SPS tank with very stable conditions. Part of my process to get ready for Zeo includes:
A new 120gal sump/refuge system (2 60+gal tubs)
Building an over sized needle wheel skimmer
Building a dual chamber calcium reactor
Adding tons of flow via 2 Tunze Streams and a controller
Auto top off system
And more!

So far only the streams are in place. The rest of the additions, as well as the offical switch to Zeo, won't take place until my new equipment room is finished. I have to finish the computer area in my basement first, since I have to move my computers as they occupy the current fish room area.

I believe you and I bought our rock from the same place at about the same time last year and I had the exact same macro growing out of mine. I had a ton of that sargassum that I see growing in there. Just a word of advice... If you ever want to get rid of it, try a Naso Tang. Mine took care of all of it in about a month.
 
I never thought about getting a Naso Tang to take care of the sargassum. I didn't think a 125 gal tank was large enough, and the Tang Police would come and get me! :)

Is the NASO the only one that would eat it? Don't most tangs have the same appetite?

TJ, your tank is looking great! I wish I would have started with a larger tank now...

I don't know much about the reef end of things but I do know my fish. Out of all the tangs that I have tried over the years the Naso was by far the easiest, most disease resistant and seemed happiest in my tank. Also the most beautiful IMO. They also behave like dogs. They get excited to see you and will eat out of your hand. They are great fish.

I don't think that you need to worry about the tang police UNLESS you never plan to move to a larger tank. In that case I would not advise getting one.

When picking one make sure that it's color is good. The smaller ones (babies) are usually very pale and from what I understand never develop their true color in the aquarium. I personally purchased about a 4" specimen and kept him for several years.
 
Cool, I just ordered a couple blue wave ballasts. I 've been wondering how the phoenix bulbs looked with those ballasts. Your tank looks great. Without actinics, would you say the phoenix bubls are more to the whiter side or blue?
 
I would have to say they cast a "light blue". Nothing like the actinics, just enough to help with the "glow". Very nice.
 
Yes, the Naso is the only tang to my knowledge that will eat the Sargassum. I have a sailfin that did not touch it. I also know of other people that have different tangs, but none touched the Sargassum except for the Naso.

It is a very easy tang to care for. I agree with CeeGee, get one that has decent color because they can be very pale. My LFS has a Blonde Naso that is awsome.
 
Well, here it is straight and simple: I'm about to give up on SPS. The few stonies that are alive, don't seem to be growing. And it seems every type of Acro I put in my tank RTN/STN (or whatever version of "TN" it is) after a few weeks. The only things that seem to be doing very well is my open brain, slipper coral, short tentical fungid, torch, and I think my pocillipora. Basically none of the Acros make it, even my green slimer isn't growing (not dead yet tho) and it's been in there for 3 weeks! It hasn't even encrusted the glued base!
Something isn't right. If anyone can offer advice, it would be appreciated. Before you ask, my params are:
Temp: 78.6
Ammo/Trites/Trates: 0
Phos: 0 (or at least not detectable)
Salinity: 1.025 (35pp)
Lighting: 3 x 250w MH 14K Phoenix
Flow: 2 x 6000 Tunze streams w/ Multicontroller
Substrate: Southdown about 1-2" (thinking about removing it and going BB)
Skimmer: Yes, and wet skimming
Calc: 400-500
Alk: 3.5-4.0
Sump/Refuge: Total of 40gals, but upgrading to 120gals

That's about it. Based on what I know, all my numbers appear to be in check. I feel there is something very serious that I'm overlooking that Acros don't like.

Please help before I throw in the towel!
 
Im still sort of a newbie so I cant advise you on the SPS, but the tank looks amazing! After I saw the algae and those plants that basically took over the tank, I thought it was going downhill but now it looks great! Good Luck with the SPS and dont give up!
