Ok well I have a 4'x3'x2' custom tank being built by aquarium for you. I need all of you guys help on things here. Please post any awnsers for questions I have. The tank will have a fridge to its left and viewable on the right side. The stand is 2" metal. It will be skinned with maple to match my cabinets since my living room/dining room/kitchen is basically one room my house is so small lol. The skin will go top to bottom. The floor under the house will be re-inforced JIC.

1. Light Racks - I want one to hold my 2 lumenbright reflectors plus 4 4' T5's. I need help with material and design. I need it to hang from the ceiling also and to be able to raise it and lower it.

I have other questions but want to takle everything one thing at a time so please if you dont have anything for this subscribe because you might be able to help out on somethingelse down the line

TIA

How handy are you Tanya? If you are going to make a good quality light rack, I would suggest aluminum I-beams or even angle with aluminum rivets. Youdo not want to combine steel/iron fasteners and aluminum.

But, I personally prefer individual light tracks. I use these so that I can move one lamp at a time off the tank for maintaining just that section, rather than disturb the entire display. And if you use the right lamps, you won't need all the supplemental T-5s.

I agree with Jonathan on the material. Aluminum is the way to go. It's light, easy, to work with, and not terribly expensive. As for lifting the light rack this can be done with Bicycle pulleys. And if you attack the lights to the frame with turnbuckles you can adjust the height of each light independently.

And who said no-one ever posts on you threads. ;)

your tank description sounds quite nice, there a many light racks described in some detail here on rc that can give you ideas, as mentioned above aluminum frame rack should be simple to construct, light weight and strong, hooked up to a pulley or rail system to move out of the way when needed

lol thanks harley I feel better now lol.

Im not handy AT ALL im a dainty lil women lol. But my husband is very handy and what he's not able to do guys in his firehouse are doing for us. I use the t5's on a very unique lighting schedule as a sunrise sunset thing. I was thinking of having them individually. We will have the stand getting built in the next couple of weeks.
And wend my husband is going down to Aquariums for you to hammer out the final details and pay for the tank so they can get started. My husbands been doing this longer then me he is pretty well known on other sites he hates this site and refuses to use it. Where as me I love it and only use this site. lol go figure.

I will post a list of my equiptment tomorrow w/ there wattage for ya. Please throw out any design ideas if you can think of them.

As for the tank we decided to have a external overflow which will double as a holding tank for new finiky fish. It will be euro-braced all around. Staphire front and right side. Gonna go with a SSB for looks. All new Marcorock which is on its way now so I can get it cured in time for the new tank when it gets here. All livestock and SPS will be housed in fellow reefers tanks. Fish going in a tank all for themsleves and the sps is going into a friends tank who has one of the nicest tanks on the whole east coast so I know our expensive sps will live happy untill we get them back :)
Gona have 2 400w MH on IC electronic ballasts in lumenbright large reflectors. 4 Fiji Purple T5's on IC's. 2 Vortechs for flow. Red dragon 8.2 return pump going through the house to the 1/2 HP PC chiller housed outside up and out through a wavyseas. We have a Dialyseas on our tank and this will go onto the new tank. KZ S Skimmer. Also a reactor w/ PhosarHC and we use 2-part w/ a dosing pump. We use reef cyrstals now but think were gonna go with HW with this tank.

Brilliant on the external overflow. I have a shallow one that I keep an urchin and a few small fish like neon gobies and mollies in, plus my aptasia filtration bed.

What's "HW"?

It is a salt mix. I have 2 local reefers that I talk to alot that use it. One on a tank that is a few years old and another who started a new upgrade. The older tank user says there sps colored up some and there parameters are more stable. The other guy didnt really say much but he has used EVERY salt you can think of. When I asked him how he like the salt he said love it.

looking good tanya when you are ready post some pictures. Keep us posted on the new salt mix.

As soon as the stand gets here I will post some pics of that and the build. All the design for it is complete it went to the welder today and im waiting to hear back from him by the end of the week. Tomorrow depending how long it takes my husband to get our taxes done if early enough he will be going to go down to finish the tank design with Aquariums 4 you and hopefully they will be getting started by the end of the week also. My husband will be re-inforcing the floor under the house as soon as he gets off his lazy a$$ lol. He is just waiting for this cold front to move out a lil so he doesnt freeze under in the crawl space.

what exactly are you getting made by Aquariums for you? I am currently getting my 220, stand, sump, closedloop and lighting from them.

Have you seen anything of the quality yet? Mine was due already, but I don't blame them. I look at my email history, and there are over 100 emails from them confirming small changes. I changed my mind wayyy too much to get a snappy build time. lol

As for the tank we decided to have a external overflow which will double as a holding tank for new finiky fish. It will be euro-braced all around. Staphire front and right side. My husbands friend owns a reef store out here and he has had a bunch of large tanks customly built by them and says that they do great work

Ryan what did you order from them ?

Well the tank was ordered today :) Well we calculated everything that we would be buying not including Misc. things.

$1000 for the stand canopy plus skin
$600 for Marco Rock
$300 for New reeflectors, T5's
$100 for Live Sand
$65 for Magnets
$245 for Salt
$200 for Dialyseas filters

So its like $2500 + tank + misc. = Empty pockets :(

hehe sounds like you've thought it all out and got a pretty good deal!

So you’re just getting the glass tank itself from AFY, or did they make your stand/canopy also?

I'm getting:

220 (72 x 24 x 30) tank with starphire front and sides and 2 corner overflows
30” high custom stand and 18” high canopy, skinned in mahogany with a custom stain
OM-4way closed loop installed with Sequence Dart
3x250W PFO MH pendants/ballasts
2x140W VHO actinic with icecap 430e ballast
75G sump with Barricuda return, paltec 900 chiller/heater and asm g3 skimmer installed.

Changing the stand height to 30 and adding mahogany made the price of my stand a bit more than yours :P but I really wanted the tank to be at the same height as the trim that goes around my dining room lol.
