I am planning on setting up a sps dominated reef tank with some lps I already built the stand but regretting I didn't go wider. The current tank 72x30x24 is what the plan was only a lot of people don't seem to have this size tank. What is the ideal size for a sps tank with metal halides 3 x 400watts or is there one ? It is 30inches high.

A better size for a tank would be to make it as wide as it is tall. This provides more surface area for gas exchange. You would be far better off finding the tank first and then building the support structure for it afterwards. Check to see what is available locally. Don't forget to look for used tanks. You may be able to get a deal. If all else fails and you are too choosey you may have to go to the expense of a custom-built tank.

So from I got from your dimensions, your stand is 72x24. That means you could go with a Marineland 220 or AGA 210.

The Marineland RR tank has different locations for overflows and is slightly more expensive but in my opinion a lil bit different from the quality perspective.

I'm building a setup and bought the 210 from AGA.
Like Dave said, those are the ones from the shelf, anything else is custom from what I found in my research for tank sizes.

Here is the link to my build so you can see the tank.

A 72" long x 24" wide x 30" tall tank is a pretty standard sized tank as the previous post notes. If your tank were 30 wide and 24 high, then that would be more unusual (and better IMO). I recently bought a Marineland 265, which is a foot longer, but had been considering a custom 84"x30"x30". Ultimately that proved just a bit too expensive.

I would agree you want at the width to be at least the same as the height. Mine is three inches taller than it is wide and I would much rather it be three inches wider than it is tall.

DSA makes a 72 x 27 x 27, 225gal (I have the 72 x 24 x 27, 200gal)

I now would rather have a 30'wide and 24 tall 72 long tank but I already built the stand oh well. I like the look of 30 high but Mabey wouldn't be the best option for sps. I got a quote from Lfs of $ 750 for 220 perfecto don't know how much the 30 wide is Mabey I'll check it out thanks for the help

I'm not sure why the stand should be a limiting factor. Stands can be rebuilt a lot easier than tanks. Find the tank that best suits your tastes and pocket book and rebuild to that.

That's a very good price if the tank is reef-ready, just OK if not. AFAIK, there is no standard tank made to a 30" width. Perfecto make a 36" wide range, but not 30".
