New 265g Build

Can anyyone help me with the sump design? I would like to build today, 48x20x20?

Danny, if your on a budget, you can put a 75 gallon standard tank in there.
48 x 18 x 21.

Bought mine for 75.00, then bought tinted glass baffles for about 30 bucks.

Nothing too fancy, but works.

If I did it again. I would add 2" between baffles. Especially if you want a strong pump like a hammerhead. I probably also would make the skimmer section bigger. Lil crowded.

Basic design.

Make sure baffles in the skimmer section are high enough to accommodate a skimmer that sits deep in water. If the skimmer works well and shallow water, just build a stand.

Hope this helps. Maybe others can chime in too.

To comment more on the skimmers. Look at the popular skimmers for the volume of water and bio load you plan on having. Once you've identified those skimmers, find out what size foot print they take up, the height of them and the water level they require.

Next take that info into consideration of your sump design. THe water level will tell you how tall the baffles need to be in your skimmer chamber. Also keep in mind the interior height of your stand.

Nivram, are you anywhere around the metro zoo area, may I bribe you with a few beers to come by and give me some pointers?

Ok finally built the sump! What do you guys think? The dimensions are 48x20x20, hope it does the job.

Dude sump is huge and looks really clean.. Great job.. Did you just use regular GE sealant or what did you use to set the baffles?

Thanks Kayo, I used the acrylic glue! Is Weldon, bought it at faulkners, and it worked out. I also used the thicker Weldon on the outside panels which are 3/8, hope the heights I set will work with the 265g. Here is another pic, I have a bad feeling that the return section is too small in length, hope not. Don't know how to post multiple images, so sorry for that.

Your return looks VERY small, I hope you have a good ATO system. Also, the 2nd baffle in your bubble trap is WIDE. You shouldnt need more than an inch depending on your return pump size.

Other things to consider: Make sure you have enough room in your sump to handle the backflow from your DT when the power turns off. Also, you might need to add some bracing on the top to prevent bowing when it's full of water.

Weldon job looks GREAT!

All good advice. Return area very small, so make sure ATO is top notch! I had a struggle with that when designing my sump, I traded return volume for fuge. Great job nonetheless on the sump. I think a 2" brace on top would give some added security. Looking forward to more updates!

I was reading on the osmolator, I see you need some sort of container to pull the water from. Is there a way to hook it up straight to the rodi?

No there isn't. You can run a long tube and extent the lines on the pump to run remotely. I setup a 20-gallon tank filled with R/o in the stand, works great!

I frequent that area often. No need to bribe me. Just PM me your # and i'll text you when I have some time to stop by. There are several others just as knowledgeable in that area as well. Hopefully they will speak up :)

As others have stated, the return area is tight. If you can, I would use the second chamber to the right for return and the last chamber on right as a fuge.

To post multiple pics, you do them one at a time like you did, up to 10 images per post.

Several people have mentioned the Tunze ATO. Its a good unit but expensive. I'm using an AVAST ATO and so far would recommend it as well. If you don't want to spend that much, check out autotopoff.com or bulk reef supply. I suggest getting a unit with an backup sensor and "slosh" guard (this is easy to make once you see what it is/does).

I wouldn't recommend running your ATO straight off the RODI unit. If your ATO failed, the RODI would continue to deliver fresh water to your sump. The other issue, is if you are lazy like me, you will probably forget to check your tds and forget to change your RODI filters. Just my .02

As Marvin said u may forget to check your tds ....well forget just checking your tds .....you will get tds...its called tds creep and you will also deplete your media and membranes quicker....if you are looking for ideas with a lg build you might get some ideas from here this is my 540 build...... http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2147084 let me know if you have any questions or want to stop by and see anything.....

Nivram, what ever works to get real advice! And not LFS spend your money ideas. I've been reading this long thread done by Geoff on another site, and I have learned a whole bunch. However, I'm still debating turnover rates, flow rates and pump return head and types. This will be my next purchase, and looking hard at the Dart, hence an external pump. I will definitely be going with BB since I'm bent on sps, is just what I like. I know an lps tank is nice, just doesn't come close to the sps stuff. I have to purchase all this stuff but bit by bit, so the wife doesn't go Tyson on me. So I definitely would appreciate tht offer, same for Mrx. There are some major obstacles with my setup, as far as the space I will have to work with, and debating if I want to do 2 herbie and do the returns thru the back of the tank. If I'm able to find good 40 PVC in gray I will be more likely to do it.

Wow Mrx, what an amazing tank, man I wish I could do this at my house, the seating area next to the kitchen is next to the garage, but that is where we watch tv, so there is not way the wife would go for this. Is where she cooks and laundry room has a direct view to where the tv is, it would be perfect, darn it.
