Hello everyone, i currently have a 20g sps tank and i'm a starting a 300g tank build when i move into a the new house in the nedxt couple of weeks.I've decided to post a build thread because i've seen many other build threads on this forum and they are awesome. You get alot of opionions and help from all the well experienced reefers here, it has been great reading through them learning alot of valuable information. So now i will start my own thread for my upcomming 300g wide tank. I bought some of the equipment already and just waiting for my tank. Would love some to take suggestions from you all. The tank dimension will be 72x34x30 A little over 300 gallons will be made by Miracles. The tank will consist of two 20"longx 12 high external overflows with 4 1.5" drains, 2 1" returns, euro braced, three sided starfire, tampered bottom glass, and all glass will be 3/4 inch thick. I would love some advice and suggestions from you all and pictures and more information will follow!!

Wow thats a big step up from a 20 gallon. Thats a nice tank you have planned though, great dimensions. What do you plan on running for lighting? With that width your going to need 400 watters with a good reflector.

thanks alot!! i'm very anxious myself need to keep rushing miracles to get my tank done! for lighting i'm planning to use the Photon Plus 3x 400w and 12 39w t5's. everything is getting shipped and on the way when i have time later on tonight i will post more equipment info!

and i'm am begging someone to please help me out on this one. i still have no clue what bulbs i'm going to go with. I was thinking 20k radiums but the Photon plus comes with only icecap electronic ballast i believe so how well will they burn not running on HQI ballast? i've also read good things about Aquaconnect 14k! i don't have much experience's at all with lighting just running t5's on my 20g right now. Also what owuld be a good t5 bulb combo to supplement the MH? i was thinking of incorporating some fiji purples or pro colour? would love to have someone help me out on this one thanks!

Wow thats a crazy looking light fixture. I just googled it. Do they sell that in the USA? Are you getting the mogul or double ended model? Im not understanding what you mean by adding another 12x39w fixture, how will you be running two all in one fixtures?

I think 3x400w with 4x52w T5's is enough lighting for your tank.

Have you ever thought of the giesemann spectra?

Are you going to be running a canopy?

The radiums are a great choice so are 12k reeflux bulbs. I have seen the radiums side by side on HQI, Magnetic, and Electronic. The owner of that system likes them on the electronic ballast.

For t5 run Blue+ bulbs and super actinics.

Reefer08 the fixture will be single ended and 12 t5s are built into this fixture and yes they do sell this in the US my LFS here(canada) gets it form proline aquatics i believe

tkeracer619 Thanks for the suggestion i like a more bluish color in lighting are the 12ks really yellow?

Phillybean the sup will be roughly 12-16 feet away plumbed down to my basement

Thanks everyone for the comments! i hope everything will go as planned !

$3k for that fixture..? :eek1:

And I didn't even know they made 3x400W, 12x39W all-in-one fixtures like that. Amazing... I'm sure it'll look incredible over the tank. :) Sounds like one heck of a build! There better be LOTS of pics, that's all I gotta say. ;)

Reeflux 12ks are bluish white, no hint of yellow at all. I've been running the 250w version on my tank for the last year and love them. I tried Reeflux 10k first and hated them, much too yellow/orange. They made my reef look very bland and colorless.

Lighting
Photon Plus 3x400w and 12x39w t5 fixture
Proliflux LED moonlights

With that setup you have so many options! T5 are more efficient at producing blue (450nm) light than halides. With 4x39w Blue+ supplements per MH I think you could easily balance out a whitish bulb like the XM 10k or Ushio 14k and get much more PAR for the same energy usage. For a little bluer I really like the reeflux 12k, but I don't see the need to spend the extra money on the aquaconnects with so many T5s.

so would 20k radiums plus all those t5 supplements be way too blue? anyone got picture of the reeflux 12ks? i've heard they are a little purple or maybe i've mistaken for another bulb. so much to consider about lighting. I'm planning to use ati bulbs for the t5s as they seem to have the most par and really gives the corals a nice color. i personally think they are better than the geisermans. i don't know about the other brands but i've tried these two brands. the problem is ati is hard to get here in toronto. Also anybody know anything about the prolifux controllers? just needed to know if there are extensions so i can have my controller in the basement with the sump and also control my lights and my tunzes power heads on the main floor.

I wouldn't go 20k radiums with all those T5's. Id do a 14k, Ushio is a good choice.

Can you post up a picture of that lighting fixture? Im curious how the fixture would look.

i haven't receieved the fixture yet but should be here in a week or two but if you google photon plus you should get a good idea. it's quite thin in real life and has anice design with no FANS!! it runs pretty cool even without them
