New Acro. Help pick MH K-temp for best color

Tang Salad

Algae skeptic
Hi All,

I just got a small colony of Acropora sp. It has blue/violet colored axial corallites (growing tips). The lower portions are a very light white/cream color.

I've been acclimating it under a 14K 150w HQI bulb for about two weeks now and the lower part is starting to color up. But it's coloring up with a drab olive/brown color. The axial corallites are still blueish.

I also have a different 14K 150w HQI made by Phoneix on another part of the tank. This bulb has a much bluer/white color, despite being the same color temp as the other bulb.

If I moved the Acro under the Phoneix bulb, would it color up with a different/nicer color?

PLEASE NOTE: I'm not asking if it would appear to be a different color, as I'm sure it would under a different bulb. I'm asking if it would actually become a different color.

Many Thanks!

prob try the sps forum, but color temp is just the beginning. People have good coloration in all sorts of MH color temps. Usually it has more to do with nutrients and intensity. Softies/zoos do respond well to actinics, and usually color up, and coraline will grow faster with actinics, but SPS is another story.

Here you go Tang Salad...
This thread has been moved to the current forum.

Thanks! That was fast. :)

To clear up the points Tankslave brought up, please assume that all other variables (nutrients) are equal, as this is all in the same tank.

You still have to consider that different bulbs from different manufacturers even of the same correlated color temp, will not have the same spectrum peaks. Color also shifts over time. All's im saying is that color temp is hard to put your finger on, and it prob will make more of an aesthetic difference than much of a difference as far as your corals are concerned, IMO.

That is the reason I'm asking the question. Although both bulbs are rated 14K, they emit completely different colors of light. The Phoneix is much whiter/blue than the other.

Thanks!
