Well, to say there is a learning curve would be an understatement. Just upgraded from my D80 to the new D300, and all i can say *&^&*(^($*#!

It does everything so much better, im struggling to break the habbits ive gotten into correcting the short comings of the D80.

Well heres a bunch of SPS, hope you enjoy, sizes are all over the place, i was really tired. Some turned about better than others.

The camera however does pick up all the scratches on my frag tank A LOT more than my other camera, so it almost is worse in some regards, given the situation.

I'm working hard to get a dedicated photo tank setup in the near future, and ive got a top down camera box arriving friday, so looks back soon for hopefully some spectacular pics.

Now you've gone an done it, I have to upgrade......

Nice pics and corals......I totally agree, no autofocus can ever come close to picking out the details.......Also, I was having a problem with images not being as detailed as I wanted, so I went for another eye exam and my rx had changed just a little. If you vision is off just a little and you shoot in manual, the lens will compensate for your vision being off and then the captured image will then be slightly out of focus.........Made a huge difference in my details...

you hit the nail on head with that one, I need to put my glasses back on! I was shooting much better pictures before I put these dumb contacts back in. when you are shooting something that close, the slightest little adjustment makes a world of difference.

My eye doc actually told me that photograhers are a royal pain to refract, usually takes about twice as long for the exam. Even though I just had another exam a month ago, it's still not right as I'm having problems with some of my superfine macro focusing, he's gona hit the roof when I ask for another re-exam.....

Here's another kinda un-known little tidbit of info, whatever you do, don't squint with your other eye when looking thru the view finder, it's actually cause an over reaction with the eye your using to look thru the view finder....Thats the reason they give you the blackout thing to put over your eye when they have you look at the chart, if you were to close one eye and look at the chart the readings would be off for the open eye..... I'm actually going to get a blackout patch to wear so that I don't have this problem.

Nice job........reeeeeeaaaaaaaaal nice. Now, I REALLY want that camera. But being 15, and focusing on school, I just don't have the funds...

Absolutely some of the best raw pictures I have EVER seen.

thank you very much. Ive got my top down box coming from melevsreef tomorrow. Im very excited to see what i can do with it, should interesting, my grow out tank is only 12" deep, and i can go 6 inches under water...should make for some very different photos. Next step i will be fabricating a rail system that will hold said box perfectly over my tank, for long exposure top down shots. that im really excited about.

I was asking full auto on the camera or manual as in are you setting your shutter/ f stop / iso manually, I agree that auto focus never works, macro lens or any other lens for that matter.

the top down box should be arriving today.

And yes, the camera settings were all done manually.

when I shoot top down at the moment I use aperture priority, and previously used autofocus, as I am unable to position myself above the camera, however will the top down box, I will be able to hold the camera at an angle without distortion, which will allow me to use full manual as well.

Here's an example of a pic that is out of focus and it's totally due to my vision. When I look at the ric I can see the details, but when I go macro the image is out of focus. There is no photshop or other image tricks played on this ric, it simply has an ultra weird mouth and for the life of me I can't capture the details...This ric does some weird things...Trippy visual

This was literally taken out of the box, installed, dunked, shot, processed in 3 minutes...however it at least gives you an idea.

Ill get some nice ones with pumps off, so its not trying to rip the box out of my hand. but here is a clam shot, that normally would difficult to get, this is only a 2 inch maxima, and I was only maybe 4 inches away.

hello,

what is exactly the D300 doing so much better than your former camera? can you be precise?
also, can you tell me what lens you used for those shots?

tia,

Very nice pictures of very happy looking corals. Great job, especially for the maiden voyage.

Well, first of all it has an upgraded CMOS image sensor, which allows me to use MUCH higher ISO without all the noise, so thats a huge plus. Even more so for other areas of photography.

Its metering seems to be alot better...still have to tweek the settings, but overall much better. My D80 would blow highlights WAY out on a balanced exposure meter.

Easier to access setting changes, such as Mirror Up for tripod shooting.

Much better Autofocus which is nice for other situations.

My favorite improvement that i didnt even know about when i bought it has to be the 920,000 pixel screen, versus the 240,000 pixel screen of my D80. This makes reviewing pictures to see if they are in focus, and with proper DOF a lot easier, and far more accurate.

Also, all my macro shots are done with a Tamron 90mm macro.

any other questions that come to mind, feel free to ask.

never really thought about the glasses being the reason why my pics could be blurry, ive always wondered how my point and shoot got clearer pics then when i used my d200!
great shots, im planning on getting a d300 after i sell off the d200
