Better pictures to come when he makes it into the DT.

Beautiful fish for the time being, good luck with it. I am personally not a fan of them when they mature but in its current state, absolutely amazing

I agree that their adult colors are not as vibrant, a buddy has one and it developed nice lines that still look nice under good lighting. Thanks for the compliments!!

The juveniles are striking fish.

As Adults, not so stunning.

But I think a Chevron tang is must have for a reef tank. They are just great at eating algae off the rocks. I always have at least one in my reef tank.

I agree Dave, he's currently in QT and already going to town on the rocks.

Gorgeous fish and I got him for a steal.

I actually think full adults are equally stunning. It's just the teenage years that aren't so great ;)

I agree! Had a Chevron for years and though he/she was a really nice looking fish. o2manyfish, chevron better than a kole IYO for a reef tank?

Ca1ore, When I was in highschool in the mid 80's I worked in a fish store and we refferred to Kole as the Poorman's Chevron. I have never kept a Kole in my display tank, but I have kept them in my outdoor frag tanks and sumps.

A Kole tang doesn't appeal to me at all, but that's just my taste in fish.

I am pretty sure that physically they are probably the same fish and only visibly different.

But in my years of travelling around and visiting people's tanks I have noticed that Koles can be much more social fish (hanging out with other tangs) and are more apt to take a big interest in prepared foods.

Chevrons on the other hand seem to be more solitary and really spend their entire day focusing on picking off the rocks. But that is my perception from brief visits viewing them in other peoples display tanks.

I do know that a little over a year ago I had my mature Chevron (about 4.5") in my display tank. I picked up a tiny juvenile Chevron for friend (1"). My friend couldn't pick up the juvie and I had to throw him in an acclimation box for a few days. While putting him in the box he jumped out of the box and into the tank. At the time I had 9 med yellow tangs, 2 lrg hippo, 1 med purple, 1 Achilles and the lrg Chevron.

There is no way to catch a fish once it's in my tank an I was upset that such a pretty (and rare) fish was doomed. But not a single fish went after the juvie Chevron. Within an hour he was out chewing on the rocks, and even swam with the large Chevron without any issue.

Like I said in my prior post I think they are a required fish for any reef tank. So over the years I have had many. Getting them tiny and them moving them to other (non display) tanks when they mature or giving them away. I have never had one be a difficult or aggressive fish.

Politiceaux,

Mine definitely turn out like the photo you posted.

I recently had a bad tank crash and lost the majority of my fish. My mature Chevron survived and he looks like the photo.

Am considering a bristletooth for my tank, primarily in a functional rather than aesthetic role, so was curious on your view, so thanks. Chevron is a better looking fish, no question, but it and the Kole rather converge in appearance as they get older, so am thinking go for the cheaper option and invest elsewhere (like in an Achilles). Though I am rather pressing my luck with multiple tangs :)

Not really, IMO. They come from a different genus and should be fine.

It's been a long time since I've had a big tank where I have the opportunity to build a fish population. I moved over from my prior 90 into a new 265, a Hippo and a Yellow Tang, and added a Purple that was in QT. I also just bought a Red Sea Sailfin that is now in QT. Not sure how the zebrasomas will do, but it is a big tank. Subsequently I'm thinking about either a Chevron or a Kole (if I'd gotten my lazy butt up to milford! might have beaten you to that fish :)), but not both, and then finally an Achilles. To many tangs for a 265? Maybe!
