We picked these up from Tristan earlier this week. So far they are acclimating well, eating and getting along with their current tank mates

I had always wanted a Potters Angel, but had read that they did not acclimate well to captivity, and they also were more prone than some of the other Centropyge Angels for nipping at corals, etc. But since Tristan had had this little guy for some time, and the Angel also hadn't pestered his corals, it was something I couldn't pass up. Hence the almost midnight run up to Davis to get him (it was well after midnight by the time I finished acclimating him to our tank water and went to bed myself). Well worth the effort

Hard fish to get a good picture of because he is so active and lively

But I just love his coloration, and he is pretty photogenic

You can see how small he is compared to our purple tang (who obviously never misses a meal )

We also got this nice RBTA, which so far seems to be doing well.

from what I read up to 5", but Tristan said he had him for close to a year, so I am not sure how much more growing it has to do ? .... only found in Hawaii, if I recall.

I just lost one I purchased a few days ago. Was in quarantine for 2 weeks, then just stopped swimming/eating. Died a few days later. I am considering breaking protocall and putting the next one in the tank, thinking the more natural enviroment might help.

They are collected in Hawaii and another location near Hawaii. Forgot the name. They are my favorite fish and worth the risk with my corals.

Sorry to hear about your loss . I read somewhere that they poorly acclimate to captivity, and the only reason I took the chance on this guy was that he had been in captivity for almost a year, according to the previous owner. He must have been caught very very small/young. He is already eating pellets in our tank now (New Life Spectrum), but really loves his mysis and ArctiPods

Mine was eating Acripods as well, and would casually take a mysis. Nipped at the rocks to, but the tank he was in had 0 pod population since he was in my coral treatment tank. Was testing to see if he would nip at the coals. From the reading I have done, they are more likely to bug clams/lps and fan worms. I figured it that ever happened, the clams would go in the frag tank and any fan worm I could remove would go in the refugium. I am not a huge LPS fan, so those could go in the frag tank as well. I would trade all those for a potters that didn't nip SPS.

I would have jumped at buying a captive one, but everyone I see for sale/trade is being removed because they are causing a problem in the persons tank. Nobody trades the ones that are good citizens. I hope yours is. Figured one from the LFS, I would at least have a chance. I will try again once I get my tangs to start getting along. My yellow tang is beating up my new sailfin, who is much smaller (bad idea). I need to catch the yellow tang and hold him in the sump for a few months until the sailfin gains some strength and the yellow loses his dominance.

yea, this one basically came from a tank tear down. So far no issues with the fan worms or the 1 clam in that tank (our other clams are in the frag tank currently). Hopefully he will remain a model citizen.. only time will tell .

P.S. I know this guy was originally in a tank with acros, digis and LPS (torch coral), yumas and cloves. So hopefully in our tank he will continue to behave.. I am watching him closely

doubtful as they are both Centropyge (and I thought that they typically didn't get along with their own kind.. but I could be mistaken). But they would look noce together

Really beautiful and what a nice find, already a happy camper. Well worth the late night jaunt. I am eagerly awaiting a few centropyge angel babies in the next month.

Thank you to everyone for your kind words, he/she is definitely a beautiful fish. I know that Tristan didn't want to part with him, but he also realized that he was having less and less time to care for his tank. I only hope that we can provide as good a home as Tristan has/had.

Definitely worth the late night trip.. and he is cruising around scouring the live rock, nipping here, pecking there, hopefully getting everything he needs (along with the 3 times a day feedings ).

What Centropyge babbies are you expecting ? and from where/how ?

Tom, I have a pair of juvenile resplendent hybrid babies coming from Frank at RCT in Hawaii sometime in the next month or two... Very exciting. Sadly I have to trap my orchid dottyback that I have had for 6 years. She has become more terrritorial since going from a 120g to a 70g tank. In the scheme of aggressiveness she is mellow compared to many dottybacks but with these babies she will have a field day and there is no way I will tolerate that.

ahhh, I C... once we get our larger tank set up we may look into ordering something from RCT, we have read nothing but good things about them and their livestock here on RC.

We have an orchid also, and yes, quite mellow by comparison, although I can't speak to how ours would be in a smaller tank though, so I understand your concerns

It's been a week and a half and I felt it time for some updates

The little guy is doing well and has been seen eating everythign from ArctiPods, to frozen mysis, to small pellets (Spectrum, but he doesn't like the Thera+.. go figure.. show me a kid that likes to take his medicine, right ?.. hehe ).

His color seems to have darkened up a little over the last week or so, I assumed recovering from the stress of the move.

on a slightly separate note , I have found myself commenting to people about our purple tang (and how large he is). Here are a couple of pictures to the self-proclaimed king of our tank :

You can see from this angle how "thick" he is. As I often quip, he never misses a meal, although even though he is large and thick, he is still symetrical (not appearing fat with a big belly, unlike our orchid dottyback.. I would swear that dottyback was pregnant, except that would mean that it has been pregnant for over a year now ).
