New aquarium setup

Hello Everyone!

It has been awhile since I have been on here! I would like to reintroduce myself my name is Geoff and I live in the Alabaster area. I had a 55 gallon saltwater tank for almost 9 years that was thriving for about 6 years. However with kids and such I had let my maintenance slip and the past couple of years my tank completely crashed with hair algae and what not. I have tried in vain to get rid of all the hair algae off my corals and live rocks by taking them out and scrubbing the algae but when I did that I lost all my zoas and star polyps. About 4 months ago I tried again to clean up my rock and corals and in that process I lost 2 of my longtime fish my bicolor Angel that I had over 4 years when it actually got scared and jump out and my sixline wrasse that got sucked up into my filter when I was cleaning the protective cover. I honestly felt like giving up my one and only true hobby that I had for over 13 years! Instead of giving up the hobby completely, I decided to downgrade to a 30 gallon and start over with fresh sand and cleaned up live rock. So I have a few questions.. First of all are there any decent pet stores in Birmingham or Tuscaloosa area? Second anyone interested in buying a 55 gallon aquarium with 2 110 watt VHO and 2 175 watt MH? Third is there anyone on here that would be interested in selling my some frags and possibly some good seeder sand to help me get this aquarium back up and running as good as I can make it? Thanks and sorry for the lengthy post.

Definitely ride up and check out Steve & Steve at Aquatic Imports. Nice guys, and decent prices.

I'm a newbie myself, so I don't have anything I can frag, but if you look down a few posts you'll see a guy in B'ham that might be fragging some stuff this weekend. Not sure what came of that.

Most livestock from around here is sold out of home. I know Manny in cullman and Mark I believe is in trusville. Aquarium fantasies in Bham has good dry good prices I heard but livestock is a bit pricey. I'm in jasper and I can cut some Zoa frags Eagle Eyes, Fire and Ice, Tubs Blues. I have some Yellow Scoll coral frags and I could prolly Frag off a piece of my Hollywood stunner Chalice too. Just let me know something if you can't find any frags. As for a CUC Reefcleaners.net is the best.

Thanks for the replies. I remember Aquarium Imports it has been awhile since I have been there. I remember there prices changed every time I went there on there livestock. I used to keep coming back in there until I got the price I liked :-) I did not know if there were any newer stores around the area since Aquarium Designs closed down. Reefcleaners is where got my shipment of snails, pods, and chaeto that should be coming in next week. My aquarium looks pretty bare right now.. I have a toadstool a couple of fuzzy mushrooms, and some button polyps. At this moment I have two fish that hope will survive the move which is a Clownfish and watchman goby. My sand is all new except for a scoop full of my old sand. The live rock I have I tried keep the pieces that had mushrooms and polyps on it but I do not want to the hair algae to raise its ugly head again. Really I feel like I am in a grey area on the cycling of this aquarium so I am trying to keep a watchful eye on water parameters. The frags I am interested are the softies like the zoas so I will be glad to buy some and just see if they will take off like they have before.

I'd keep some mixed water ready, that way if you see an ammonia spike you can hopefully get ahead of it! There's always amquell in a pinch (although that would put your corals at risk). Good luck!

I no longer have the aquarium setup. Last night I was cleaning the bulbs and canopy and the Plastic part where the VHO bulbs go into broke off. On the MH I found out last night that has a short in the ballast when it trip the circuit breaker and nearly electrocuted me. Needless to say it was a horrible night for me I had those lights for about 10 years and never had problem with them and when I decide to break the tank down neither set of lights no longer function. I also went ahead and just gave the tank and stand to the thrift store.
