New BTA question

Thanks revenant, every bit of help counts, I guess you learn something new every day & it keeps you on your toes; thats why I love this hobby. ;)

I took a few pics of the BTA & don't know how to upload them, Is there a site that people use to upload pics?

Np! I personally like Photobucket for image hosting, but there are other places.. google "free image hosting" and shoot for somehting which doesn't make you jump through too many hoops. :)
 
Does its mouth ever close tight? It looks a little bleached. Just make sure it gets food and make sure your parameters are all good. It should be ok..yours just looks really stressed. I never asked you..How long has this tank been up and running? Its foot doesn't look too healthy maybe with a lot of tlc it will be ok. Feed it mysis every day and shrimp or silver sides ever three days. Karen says try to get your bta to eat a few days after you add the bta to your tank.

Since the past 3 days, the mouth has remained open w/ the guts out.

Do you think it would be a good Idea to feed it with the guts out?
Just don't want to cause it any harm.

my vote is no, so i would suggest NOT feeding it until somebody else says 'yeah do it'

its still stuck to the glass, its still alive, thats a good sign

BTAs are photosynthetic, so even bleached he's still making energy (well, not making, but you get it)

he is also getting small amounts of food/nutrition from stuff in the water column--what do you feed your fish anyway?
 
Nope, don't feed it when its mouth is open like that! Will definitely stress it out.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned removing the clown, especially since you mentioned that it was PICKING at the anemone's .. was it guts?? I also noticed that it's a bit small to be hosting a clown ... while the clown is obviously not your main problem (and I think it's more of a water qualitiy issue than a temperature issue) , I think it would lessen the stress on 'nem if you were to give it some peace for a few days, at least until it regains its composure.
 
I have brought down the Temp to 78, and someone in the lighting forum mentioned my lights must be suspended 8-10" away from my tank?? does that sound right?

Also the female clown has stopped picking on the guts and its currently swimming close to the nem tenticles.
I feed my Fish Selcon soaked diced shrimp ,formula one, and mysis. Do you think I should spot feed the nem mysis + selcon only or should still wait?

are the guts still out? (remember thats a bad sign)

that food should remain in the water column, so anything not eaten will (hopefully) make its way to the nem if it wants any.

as far as raising the lights, i think 8-10 is pretty common (we're at 10) and it would definitely lower your temp way more than reduce light intensity at the bottom of the tank. i really like a fan vs raising since your nem needs light as he isnt eating much/at all.

yeah, i missed the 'get the clown away' part, sorry :(

He is looking the same as the pics, guts are still showing & mouth wide open as it can be. Since every one is saying not to feed it, I was thinking of turning of the pumps and spot feed him with a few drops of Selcon.

Do you think that would help?
 
Karen hasn't responded to you yet? Do you have any mysis shrimp? Try seeing if the mysis will stick to its tentacles. If not then you have a really sick bta. When I first got my bta I was able to feed it the first week I had it. I wouldn't wait any longer than that. Yours seems to be happy on the glass.. I would try to see if it will take some mysis if it doesn't eat the mysis the fish will eat it. Only try to feed it when its inflated.
 
Yes, just got her email; she says I should feed it 1/2 inch silverside and see if it will take it. I am back at work right now, and as soon as I get home I'll try the Mysis first and then some shrimp. (have no siversides).
 
I would like to try and feed my new bta also, but it's so far back under the rocks I can't reach it.. grrr.. still! but it's looking ok from the little I can see if it.. I feed ZooPlex with my mix of mysis and brine and other meaty stuff in the evenings, and in the mornings just some brine. Maybe it's getting some food from that? My other cnidarians seem to like the ZooPlex.. so hopefully it's getting something.
 
I could.. maybe I will tonight or tomorrow.. the tank is 30" deep and the nem is at the bottom behind about 12" of rock... I'm hoping it just moves out of that spot a little so I can get a better angle at it..

edit: I am going to get some of these for sure.. I have larger ones, but they're for moving rocks and stuff.. hard to make articulate movements with them..

Good news :)

I think we finally nailed the main culprit that was stressing the BTA.

and it was .................(drum roll please)........... "Water Temp"


My previous fixture was a PC satellite w/fan and had a fixed distance of 2-3" above my tank. When I got my new TEK fixture last week, I assumed I should keep it the same distance, not knowing they should be suspended 8-10" above the tank.

The BTA is doing fine with the guts inside and the mouth closed up.
A few minutes ago I was going to feed it but it was trying to expel a piece of krill that was feed at the LFS. I guess I'll let it concentrate taking care of its business, and then feed it. ;)
 
You'll want to keep your clown away from the bta for at least another week so as not to put undue stress on it since it is starting to recover from the water temp.

Also did you make sure to acclimate the anemone to your lights? If not you should reduce your lighting scehdule by a couple hours and slowly increase the time back up to normal over a couple weeks.
 
Before I bought the anemone, I was using this color changing stick onto glass thermometer, but have recently bought a digital thermometer.

As far as light acclimation, since it has bleached a bit, do you think it would need more light?

Also, It looks like it is having a hard time getting rid of a piece of krill that has stuck to the guts and can not detach itself. Is there some thing that can help him ?
