New build, looking for advice

Hey all,

Been creeping here for quite some time and chime in from time to time.

Here in the next few months I will be upgrading from my 55 gallon tank to a 125. It is a going to be reef ready with either a 40 gallon sump or maybe a 55. The tank will be lit by three 175 watt MHs and 4 supplemental t5s. I am wanting to keep an S. Haddoni, and was wondering what you guys would suggest skimmer wise, and if I should dose anything. I have been researching anemones for a little while now, so I think I am ready to give it the care it needs, however, I am still a rookie when it comes to equipment:bounce1:

Assuming you are using a quality salt mix there should be no reason to dose for the nem but you may need to dose for corals if you go with a full blown reef.

Skimmers are all over the place in terms of performance and price. Best thing to do is just search "best skimmer for 125" and go from there. Some are going to say Reef Octopus, some will suggest SWC, etc. There are lots of skimmer thread on RC. There is one thread in particular about a newer ebay skimmer that is reportedly very good for the price. Sure someone will chime in with that info.

More importantly is setting your tank up to best care for the nem. Things like the right type of sand and sandbed thickness, aquascape, flow and powerhead positioning that will best protect the nem if it takes a walk. You'll also want to allow the new tank to mature a bit before you add the nem. Your fish list should also be thought through as chances are you will lose many fish (even clowns have been eaten by carpets). Finding a nem that has been healthy while in captivity for a while will also help ensure success. Good luck!

Thanks for the response Greech. I will be moving over all my LR and some of my sand from my current tank, so ~100-150 pounds of rock. Will this cut down on the time needed for the tank to mature. The 55 has been set up for over a year and will be closer to 2 years once the 125 is set up.

For waterflow I will have at minimum a reef octopus high seas 201b(dual head 1500 gph) and a koralia 750. I am contemplating another High seas 1500 or maybe a 3000 gph. Guess it really comes down to how the rock work is set up and what other corals I have in there.

Skimmer wise I have been leaning towards a reef octo, just because there are plenty of good reviews out there for them. My biggest question is if I should go overkill on the skimmer because of the amount of waste anemones put off.
