you'll love the 40D, I've had mine for about a month now and have fallen into the "L" craze.... and I thought reefing was expensive.

I have a 30D, trust me you'll spend a lot on your lenses.... Very Fun tho, I love mine... If you want to protect everything I suggest a Pelican case here is a link..
