New Canon Macro

Just got a canon 100mm macro lens and an xti camera. I've never had an slr before so i figured this would be an excellent camera to learn the ropes on. Honestly i have no idea what i'm doing yet, so i plan on reading the manual and finding a good book. I think it really takes some nice pictures. Anyone reccomend a tripod?

What i really need to learn is to capture the entire picture in focus. If anyone has quick tips or can point me to a good website i'd appreciate it. Not bad though for out of the box. Can't wait to get the tripod and get some shots of all my blasto's and sps.

DOF is extremely limited at macro working distances. Try using a larger aperture to get more, but you'll have to use higher ISO or slower shutter speeds to maintain proper exposure. Fortunately, corals don't usually move very fast. :D This is where a tripod (and remote shutter release) comes in handy.

I use a Bogen 3021BPRO with a 488RC2 ballhead, which is a nice sturdy combo. Expect to spend $200+ for a decent quality tripod and head. Buy cheap and you typically buy twice.

I spent some time tonight trying to learn about the aperature settings and how to best utilize them. This is a picture of the same mushroom as above but more of the photo is in focus this time.

Nice shots hexedagain. What type of fish is that in the pic? I really like how the software tells you what settings you took your picture on. I was able to get a much clearer shot of the same fish after learning a bit more.

Which 100mm lens are you guys using?

I am using the Canon ef 100mm f/2.8 macro lens.

I just couldn't take it anymore. I bit the bullet and ordered the Canon 100 macro for my 20d.

Zin,

I've always had good luck with B&H and Adorama. While you are there I'd suggest getting a tripod as well...
