new clam with no foot?

Hi All,

I purchased my second clam this past Saturday. A small (a little bigger than 1") ORA blue maxima. I stupidly did not look at the bottom of the clam before taking it home. When I did get it home it would not attach and still wont attach to the anything I put it on. I tried high on the rocks, low in the sand (with a flat rock right below the sand). It won't attach. When I did finally turn it over to look at the bottom I saw a hole on the opposite side of the hinge. I don't see a foot or any bysall threads. Is the foot just withdrawn or dead? The hermits I have won't leave it alone when I put it in the sand. I am thinking about trying to put a pvc pipe around it so hopefully the crabs will leave it alone.

My first clam was a gold maxima that immediately attached and has doubled in size in the 6 months or so that I have had it.

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

were you there when they removed the clam from the tank??

some people don't understand about the clams foot and just tug at it until he comes of the bottom. the foot is inside the shell so you may not be able to see it. try placing him on a small flat rock and if you have to, cover him with half a pop bottle ( with holes for flow ) to keep the CUC away.

hopefully they didn't damage the foot at the LFS, it is tough enough trying to raise small maxima's without added problems.

I hate to say it but when some of my rock work collapsed and the clam was ripped from its foot....well it was the end for that clam. I hope you have better luck. Most fish stores either keep these guys on the sand, bare bottom or in pvc. I would be careful buying future live stock from them.

Update: the foot must have just been withdrawn. It finally attached!

Hopefully, this little guy will settle in. It's gorgeous, as pretty much all aquacultured ORA clams are.
