New clown tang...

Fatty little guy, only 3". Ate aggressively at the lfs, pics soon to come. I know about the horror stories and the challenges in keeping one but with the upcoming project and the good signs it showed, I bit the bullet.*fingers crossed* :mixed:

I am sure you know that the clown tang is one of the more aggressive fish we can place in our tank. I am curious as to why you thought the wealth of advice warning against this type of stocking was not relevant to your situation. I am honestly curious as to the rationale.

From your post I'm gathering you have some sort of large tank project coming up? Clown tangs are pretty common...I see no reason to "bite the bullet" now.

I have one (going on 6 years),with 3 other tangs(saifin and two yellows) in a 180g.
Can't say that this is my most aggressive tang and I have no horror stories.
Hope you quarantine him as they are prone to ich...I did mine with copper.(Tried hypo but that just never seemed to work for me.)
Room may become an issue as mine swims the 6 ft length of my tank all the time and my tank is double sided (rocks in the middle).
Good luck!!!

Maybe you got the Rodney Dangerfield version of a clown tang (no respect!)

Would you mind posting a new thread with the tangs you are keeping, order of introduction, and other fish in the tank? Thank you!

Oh, pics would be nice as well. There are few topics that generate more discussion than compatability issues with tangs, and I think your combination is interesting.

Yes he is in the 120g tank... but all the tangs are relatively small. I told you I know what I am getting myself into.. if he does not like the big cube then I will get rid of him simple as that. As of right now he's doing fine, eating, not scratching, no aggression. I can't get a good picture, he's pretty fast. I always wanted a clown tang and I have never found one that looked this good... that is the only reason why I chose to buy him. I am sure he will not outgrow the 120 anytime soon. Also I would like these post to be a negative free... I don't need anymore horror stories, I've heard enough and also how stupid I am for purchasing this fish(not that I am saying you guys did), thanks. I would love to here some more success on these fish, I find them very inspiring.

In my experience a healthy young specimen is rare around here... Maybe you guys get better quality clown tangs in your neck of the woods, good for you guys.

Is it the Clown Tang or Clown Trigger that hits puberty and then kills off its tankmates? I can never remember.

I was also at the Baltimore Aquarium last year and noticed they had 2 clown tangs in a very, very, large reef tank. These guys get sick big, and are listed as an expert only fish.

I consider myself a pretty decent fish keeper, but after losing my Achilles tang that had been doing great for almost 2 years, I won't try a difficult and problem prone fish again...no matter how beautiful.

You can see here in the Greenwich Aquarium Reef Tank that it's the only tang in the tank I believe....and it seems like this tank is 8 feet long and at least 4 feet front to back, roughly 500 or so gallons.

Sorry about your archilles tangs, I had some good experience with one years back before i broke down my fowlr tank. This is not the first "difficult" fish i've kept, but definitely up there.

Sorry about your Achilles, they can be just as difficult as clown tangs. I saw another tang in that tank, only for a brief second, it was dark and looked like an acanthurus but for some reason adult chevron is sticking in my head. That clown is still very young yet still covers every inch of that tank. I'd imagine it would need a longer tank in the future.

The responses aren't negative, and there are horror stories for a reason. A clown tang in a 120 gallon tank with 2 other tangs is a bad idea from everything I have ever read and heard about these fish.

I'm pretty sure I said no one said anything negative. I don't think I asked why there were horror stories either, not to be jerk.

You said you didn't want to hear horror stories. I told you there was a reason there were horror stories regarding this fish, and anyone who stocks them in a tank should hear them. We can't ignore the truth because it interferes with what we choose to do.

There was nothing negative said.. On another note, if you didn`t want anything negative said then you shouldn`t have posted this as it is going against ALL the information out there about clown tangs and their size and aggression. There is a minimum tank size for a reason..
