New construction - tank room advice

Looks great. How old is your current house? Congrats on the build. Things look great. Has your contactor been helpful with the fishroom design? What did you use for your renders? Sketchup? Your an engineer so I'm doubting it.

The current house is 16 years old but we were just married and didn't have kids when we moved in 10 years ago - now we've outgrown it. It's a nice house in case anyone wants to buy it. :) My wife tells everyone we are building the new house so I can have room for a bigger tank . . . I guess that's a good sign.

I have a great contractor but he still looks at me cross-eyed when I talk about the tank room. The only thing I asked him to do was put in the floor drain, a sink, dedicated circuits, and a plug in for the generator.

I used Sketch-up for the drawings.

Well, we closed on the house this morning so I have a basement tank room that needs to be filled. Stupid's setup had me drooling so I may have to bite the bullet, call up Glasscages, and put together my shopping list for The Reef Stop.

Next step is to put together my plans for moving the current tank.

Keep this thread up it is great. I have printed it out so I can use it when i start to build my house. so much thought. Please include pics when they come along

In that case you may want to start looking at local pizza vendors Mike!
I know a great place right down the road... And they have a HUGE pizza too.

Mike - How long do you have to move the tank?

Sorry Mike, I didn't mean to do that to ya :D Umm yea you'll need some pizza.

I love this Idea of it coming out of the wall like that!! I did have one question, after you felt the heat that MH put off, what was your thoughts on that?? And keep in mind mine bulbs are about one year old now so I guess there not as high on the par. You've got alot of planning ahead of you now, just try to take it slow and look over each step 2 or 3 times before going at it.

Have you settled on what style over flow at this point??

floor drain would be nice and I would put in atleast 4 -20 amp circuits and gfi outlets.

I would have them GFI at the circuit box I ran three 15's to my room but I have another 15 available if I need it in the future.

I would start looking at ways to control humidity and to seal the room off from the rest of the hosue.

you can use a common bathroom fan for that im pretty sure, well my uncle did it for his tank room, but that was years ago......hope it helps

But he's going to probably have at least 400 gallons of water back there.......then if he wants a frag tank......... Could end up anywhere between 400 and 500 gallons of water with halide lights will lead to a lot of evaporation. IMO

Who? Me? 500 gallons? I'm looking at a 225 the same dimensions as Stupid's, a 70-100 gallon sump, a 75 gallon frag tank, and a refugium.

Uh oh, that's about 400 gallons already . . . . sssshhhhh . . . don't let the wife know.

Well, I'm all moved in and ready to start planning the new tank. About the only thing at the old house is my tank - it looks lonely sitting in the empty house. I'm scared to death to move the thing so I just go over there every day to add water and stare at it.

Here is the tank room ready to go.

This is the finished wall where the tank will sit.

Here is a similar view showing how the new tank will go. In the meantime, the old tank will sit on the same wall as the TV.
