New Gigantea

Good evening.

We'll i picked up our new nem today and all seems we'll so far. It is a monster. Easily 10-12 inches. Mouth is closed and right now it is attaching in the sand by the rock face that i made especially for him:)

Couple questions though.

I know they need a toone of flow but right now i have all the powerheads on except the one above him which seems to be just pushing to much at the moment as he is trying to attach. Can i just leave it off for the evening and then turn it on tommorrow after i know he has attached. He is getting a fair amount of flow just not as much as i know he needs.

He was under a 250 halide at the store andi currently changed my light on his side to a 250 but want to put the 400 watt over him. When should i attempt to do that?

I will post pics as soon as the batteries recharge.

Are your powerheads covered? If not I would leave them off while you are sleeping, mainly because Gigantea's prefer to be on the rocks, so I would expect it to move a bit.

Yep they are covered:)

He is half on the rock and half on the sand. But seems firmly attached.
So now how much should he be moving around in the current. I have done a fair amount of reading and get either lighly blowing the folds up to all out current.
Just want to adjust the flow properly tommorrow.

And no it is not that florescent. It is more like a bannana yellow. I had delphinus from this board and who has 2 giganteas check it out before i bought. He figures it may go a darker beige colour once acclimitized.
And the rock he is up against is newly cured eco rock that i picked up to fill in some empty spaces and i am sure glad i did now:)

Pics added:)

Looks really good, and big. One day I will get one of those (( have Haddonis ))

As long as your powerheads are covered, might as well turn them on, let it settle in to what the tank is going to be like.

From my understanding, they like random flow.

Beautiful anemone. I just picked up his little brother. He's only about 4 inches across. I hope mine grows to look like yours some day.

Wow that is a relative:) They are trully the most fascinating creatures. But after all the stuff i have read on here i am still nervous:(
As of this morning he did exactly what Todd said he would do. We are completly out of the sand and on the rock face. But mouth is tightly closed. Worried about the turning the flow on this morning as everytime i turned it on last night it pulled him out of the sand. So i might have to mess with where the powerhead is so it doesn't suction him off the rock:)
Otherwise all seems somewhat good:)

OKay so we are still doing good. Mouth was open about the size of a quarter earlier but is the tightest i have seen now. Hasn't deflated at all and seems to be spreading out. After alot of messing around he seems happy in the flow. Now should i be concerned that it won't eat? Or just wait it out?

What kind of flow do you have yours in is he seriously bouncing around in the flow or is it just lifting the folds? I am not sure how to go about this whole flow thing. He seems to have longer tentacles than mine.

I have the exact same anemone, I have it in a 60 cube I have a vortech set on half power providing the bulk flow and a wavy sea on the high powered return that gives the intermittant wave avtion every 3 -5 seconds the anemone gets a pummeling then a break and so on. the oral disc lifts and drops tne tentacles never get a full rest from the flow as it is, I have camera issues and its still early days for my nem but pics will come if i get past my initial period.

I'm no pro with Gigantea. This is my first one. The flow is just moving the folds every few moments and keeps the tentacles moving.

Really nice nems guys, never see any at my lfs, was wondering how much does it normally cost?

I never see them at my LFS either. This is the first time, and they had it marked as "Colored Carpet". I paid $50 for a 4" Gigantea.

Okay we'll here is an update.

Seemed to be doing really we'll untill yesterday afternoon when i went down and it was about the size of a baseball. Still firmly attached to the rock and mouth tight. Took about 2 hours and was large and in all its glory again. Chocked it up to flushing water in and out. Then this morning when i got up it was still large and happy looking and just went down now and it was small but not as small as yesterday. Still attached and mouth still closed. But when i feed the tank it immedietly started to inflate. I am going to assume it's hungry?I tried to feed it yesterday with some mysis but it never really had any interest in it. And not wanting to stress it anymore i was going to just leave it for a few days.Should i go and get some fresh shrimp etc and try to feed it again or?

Hoping this isn't the begginning of the end.

Here are some pics from today but the lights were off and the flash on so it looks florescent but its not:) And no its not a new tank that is just freshly cured eco rocks that we bought to fill in the extra spaces we had:)

last time my LFS had gigantea they were 250 bucks.

hansofam if you anemone was getting enough flow you would not have sand in that corner....

more alternating flow might make it happy

Inflation/deflation cycles are usually the beginning of the end, sorry to say. But there is a chance that it is still acclimating. I have my fingers crossed.

We'll good news. I feed it and it ate:) Feed him about 3 small krill and they were gone in about 2 minutes and mouth is nice and tight again.
And i did manage to mess with the flow a little more and seem to have a better balance. Now it is moving at all times and about every 5-7 seconds it gets a extra push of flow that folds him over.So i am hoping that maybe the deflation was just another water change for it. It has only been in the tank since Tuesday evening so crossing my fingers it is still acclimitizing.
