New Goniopora

So I went to Mr. Coral today, and got a beautiful Green Short Tentacled Goni. It was $90! for like a 3 inch piece. But there was a 37% off, so it was much less.

Heres a pic, but the colors are not accurate at all, its so much brighter in person.

Anyway, I don't know how I'm supposed to feed it when it has such puny mouths, and short tentacles. I know most people feed them cyclopeez, but I don't think it could swallow that.

any help is appreciated. thanks!

ok, I was actually planning on buying that.

Is there a difference in care needs between long and short tentacled goni's?

Oyster eggs = $$$ but they will last forever.
Funny story recently.
I bought a small DT tihngs of oyster eggs for $20. I dosed them one morning with my regular DT's. Come home in the afternoon to a warm liquid.......$20 out the door.

I never knew there was a long and short tentacle goni. They will expand larger when happy. They close up when unhappy or at night. I suggest going to www.goniopora.org/ Here you will find all the info you need. Good Luck!!

Thanks, I've checked out that site tons of times.

My goni seems pretty happy, extending alot more than it did in the store in less than a day. Its about 3/4 of an inch extended from its skeleton which is pretty good.

I actually have no oyster eggs on me now, but in the mean time, I'll try cyclo. Will it also eat the juice of it if not the actual cyclopeeze?

I tried feeding a smelly mixture of all those ingrediants from goniopora.org. The goniopora's reaction confusing. After I fed it some of the mixture, nothing happened, but less than a minute later, each polyp slowly retracted. And while they were retracting, their mouths were wide open, and then they would close when they reached the skeleton.
Then a minute later, they all opened up again.

Is this normal? They obviously reacted to the feeding.

I do not feed mine directly. I feed my tank a mixture of chopped foods and that is it. Here is a pic on my purple goni when I first got it....

And here it is just recently, Best I can get as it is in the back of the tank.... It has colored up really nice...

WOW, I love those purple tips. I think I saw the exact thing at the store. And I would have gotten it, but I think it looked kind of dull, it was probably because of the lighting, it was kind of in the back. But this one is fine.

I also saw a nice green one at another LFS, only an inch across. I would have gotten it, but went with neon green clove polyps, as a frag. Is $25 worth it for a 1 inch goni baby?

And are you saying that I shouldn't feed mine directly? and more to just add it to the whole tank?

i turn off my pumps and use a mix of cyl/mysis mix and sort of do the turkey baster (give it a small coating). let the pumps stay off for 5-10 min to let it settle on the goni. it will retract when it gets what it wants..

oh, ok thanks!

I don't know if this is normal. But are all of you're goniopora's sensitive to little things like a hand coming in the tank? Whenever I put my hand in the tank, it starts wilting slightly, then retracts within maybe 1 or 2 minutes. And my hands are clean, I wash them with water before I put them in.

yeah. mine was lookin rather poor. due to me not feeding it and having to move him a few diff times.. now he is in med light with no direct flow and he is full and happy as can be.

Update on the Goni. It's doing great!

I've fed it a couple of times, and it's eating...I think. I still need to get Oyster Eggs

Just another question, Some of it's tentacles are extended more than others, is that normal? Will all the others extend to that length?

Heres a pic:

The colors in the pic are really inaccurate. Its much greener in person.

New New Goniopora

New New Goniopora

I was at the LFS today again. And saw a beautiful small frag of a red Goni. I bought it for $30. Is that a fair price?

It's doing good, it still hasn't been in the tank for more than a day, it's polyps should extend more. Some pics:

In comparison with the other one.

I was feeding it not long ago. That recipe on goniopora.org. I'm not sure if it was eating. When I put the mixture in the tank around it, it started closing. Then I saw this white thread (the inside of one of the polyps) pop out, I thought it was a sign that it was trying to catch food with it and swallow it? I'm still not sure.

Then later it closed up and was swelling like this:

So is this a sign that it's eating? The food obviously affected it somehow. I'm just not sure.

Good luck with the green goni I've never had any luck with them.
The red seems so much easier to maintain my red goni is about a year old.
I feed mine a mix of mysis and dt oyster eggs.

Really? what makes the green's so hard to keep?

How do you feed your goni mysis? Do you crush it up? or blend it?
I'm not sure if my red goni ate or not when I fed crushed cyclo and other stuff. It reacted to the feeding, but I'm not sure if it ate. Are the pics from above a sign that it got what it wanted?

And there are a ton more red goni frags that are only $30, I think I'll buy some more :D

I don't know what it is but I've stopped buying the green ones because they don't seem to make it even with regular feedings.

I just smash it all up with the back of a spoon in the cup.
Some times there are still some large pieces that it can't take in.
I think I get the best feeding response with dt's oyster eggs.

Here I just took a quick shot of me feeding:

Woah, nice pic. I've never seen mine do that ,so I guess it hasn't eaten, i dont know.

It still might be too early to start feeding it, its only been in there for like 2 daysish. I'll try later, adn with the oyster eggs. Thanks!

In 5 years I've never target fed mine anything....

For that matter, I don't target feed anything in my tank...

Happy Reefing
