New guys - baby Regal and Venustus

It could just be angle of the first picture, but the Venustus looks pretty skinny, if it doesn't start eating prepared right away (( mine was eating prepared within minutes of being released )), might want to consider sacrificing a rock for it to pick at until it starts eating.

You are correct, it is skinnier than I like. I have plenty of rocks I can sacrifice, but I was hoping to get it interested in the prepared stuff first.

Well it would appear that neither of these fish are interested in my brand of cooking at the moment.

I offered the Ova and the Arctic pods, but didn't really see any activity. Actually saw more activity with the brine shrimp yesterday. I'm thinking about trying to hatch some brine, I've heard the Naupli are supposed to have good nutritional value due to the yolk sack, but I've never tried this before.

Both fish seem to be more "with it" today as opposed to yesterday, but neither is really eating much yet.

Tomorrow is another day, hopefully they'll be interested tomorrow.

I would avoid dry foods as they may lead to bouancy issues in baby fish....
go with spir/omega brine and pe Mysis...mince the Mysis... flake up some Mysis between your fingers and let it blow around the tank...
keep the lights off a few days and few 7-10 min a day...ove/baby brine works too...

good luck!

venustus swim oddly due to their feeding nature and picking on rocks...they are beautiful to watch when out...

did you get the 1 inch venustus from Michael? I hope so...was very tempted by her...a beauty and the smallest I have seen in a long time...

Didn't completely understand this. Did you mean to leave the lights on for 7 - 10 minutes a day while i'm feeding them or feed them 7 - 10 times a day with the lights on?

How long before I should be concerned that they aren't eating.

Well there is some good news and some concerning news. I haven't seen either fish really eat yet, at least not the stuff I've been feeding. To date, I have fed the following:

Hikari Mysis
PE Mysis - minced
Hikari Brine
Reef Nutrition Arctic Pods
Nutramar Ova
Sea Veggies Purple variety

The Venustus appears to have partaken in the Sea Veggies, judging from the excrement that was coming out of him this morning - that's the good news.

The regal is hiding in a corner not seeming interested in anything at the moment - a little concerning.

pH is 8.2
Salinity is a 1.023 as measured on a refractometer
Nitrates are less than 10.

I'm going to try to pick up some live brine if I can find it today as a last resort effort to get these things going.

Starting to get worried though...

hey bud,
keep the lights off...
keep up the 7-10 smaller feedings...
maybe try live brine/live black worms to stimulate their feeding response...
can toss in a fresh clam for a couple hours for them to pick on...
what is the temp?
tk

I wouldn't be worried, yet. It has only been 2 days since you have the regal. Regal is known to be shy at first. Give it a few more days and keep the water clean. Get some PVC pipes and/or live rocks in your QT for it to hide. Try clams or mussels (seafood section in a grocery store). I have a lot of angels. My experience with them regarding feeding is that if they are not interested in clams, they aren't going to touch any other foods.

lr should not be a part of any qt system...
so, if an angel wont eat a clam it will die?

Agreed about the LR, I haven't medicated yet though, so I figured it would be ok until I started any treatments, I'll pull it out tonight.

I'll try the clams, that's one thing I haven't done yet. I'm also going to try to get some live brine on the way home. Not many places close to me have it though. I may try hatching some, though I've never done that before. Is this a bad or good idea?

I would say the temp is about 78. What should it be? Should I turn the lights on when I feed or just keep them off constantly.

I really appreciate your help on this.

live brine maybe from bz or la?
could try live pods...
I tend to run cooler because of the deepwater fish and both regal and venusta when babies tend to be a bit deeper...try lowering your temp a bit...

very sorry...any ideas?
did you drop the temp a bit?

Thx..

Not really, I checked all the water parameters last night and this morning and everything was fine.

I did drop the temperature, but nothing drastic, I think it's down to 75 or so.

He was out of the PVC "reef" and just hiding in a corner last night and that made me a little suspicious.

He picked at stuff, but never really ate with much enthusiasm. The venustus still hasn't eaten any of the mysis or other offerings, which makes me nervous. It seems to prefer that brown film algae that is growing in the tank.

I am hatching some brine right now and plan to put a feeding station in, a la Paul B. I'm hoping that does the trick.

I let Michael know, he said he's planning to get some more in on Monday.

I had considered one of those bluelines or the baby goldflake instead of the regal, and if I end up getting another regal, I may add one of those to the shipment to make the shipping worth it.

Hate losing fish, but really hate it when I don't understand why. That's two now in the past month, my Mitratus and now this guy.

Wish this thread had a happier ending.

yeah, I hear that, very sorry...
sometimes it just happens...
I have also been eyeing the baby bl...they are adorable...
in the future if you see something at nya you are interested in, lemme know, he is only an hour away and I am happy to go check things out...

Will do, I actually talked to him on the phone twice before ordering and I believe him completely when he said they were eating in his shop.

Have you had a chance to see the Blue lines or baby gold flake in person? $200 is more than I usually drop on a fish, but if I knew it was in good condition and eating I would definitely consider it. A gold flake is on my stock list long term. I keep kicking myself for not getting the hybrid goldflake x flagfin that PIA had a few months ago, but he was like 500 and I wasn't ready for it.
