New Hanna Marine Alkalinity (dKH) Checker

Just spoke with Hanna. Put in for replacement reagent at the end of January. Per Hanna, I am on the list, but they are currently 2-3 weeks out with fulfilling replacements from date of request. Expect it may take a little longer than that.

Really glad to read they came out with a dKH model.

From the link supplied at the bottom:

HI772 Checker® is supplied with (2) sample cuvettes with caps, alkalinity reagent starter kit for 25 tests (1 bottle of alkalinity reagent, 1 ml syringe and tip), *** battery, instructions, and quick start guide.

The picture showing the packed of dry reagent is a Chlorine Checker.

Good catch.

To me it looks identical to older ppm Alk. It's just doing the ppm x 0.056 conversion and displaying the dKH units rather than ppm. If you convert the units, the stated accuracy is identical (given the significant digits on each page).

Resolution 1ppm, Accuracy +-5ppm +-5% of reading is equivalent to
Resolution 0.1 dKH +- 0.3dKH +- 5% reading

It's the same light source and method, accuracy is the same just with converted units. Maybe Hanna need a way to pay for all the extra reagent they suddenly had to give away.

While I'm here, quick note of appreciation to Jason: love your test kit comparison threads and salt mix testing. Awesome attention to detail and a great contribution to the community, thanks!!! Hope the salt mix tests keep on coming

Thanks droog. Waiting the results for the latest round from AWT and Triton. I'm looking forward to testing and comparing multiple salt mixes as my next project.

I got a personal call from customer support agent (Shayla) at Hanna this morning and she confirmed that they were shipping replacements as quickly as they could.

It was a very pleasant experience and I went ahead and ordered the new unit to test. I will follow with update when I receive.

Sincerely,

David

I just received my new Hanna HI 772 Marine Alkalinity checker today. The kit uses the same HI755S reagent as the HI 755 kit used.

Only visible difference with the packaging is that each (2) curvette has a 10ml marking on the side, and the kit does not contain a 10ML syringe as the HI 755 kit does (no stripe on HI 755 kit curvettes).

I ran a couple of ben tests on my 90 reef tank with similar results of 10.5/10.7 dKH. I also ran a pair of tests on my smaller 50 cube and results there were 9.3/9.4 dKH.

Just for the heck of it, I also ran pair of tests on the older HI 755. Results were a little off (lower after calculating the ppm/dKH compared) of 178/180 ppm or 9.96/10.0. Noting the difference, I pulled out my Red Sea Alk kit and ran a couple of titration tests, coming back 10.4/10.7.

I can't explain why the older HI 755 was off this much (with new reagent used) but it does explain the error in measurements at end of month when I had some issues with STN/RTN on a few acros (I also run ULN tank on 90).

Sincerely,

David

As one who's been affected by and also following the Hanna Alk checker reagent threads, I found this email from Hanna I received today quite a surprise.

http://hannainst.com/marine-alkalin...um=email&utm_campaign=Aquariums_HI772_Feb2016

One wonders with this impending release that Hanna didn't offer any specials to those affected. BTW, its been since the 27th of January and still no replacement reagents. Anyone received theirs as yet?

Sincerely,

David
Still nothing and I just sent Hanna another email. Will see what they have to say this time. I do know that Hanna U.S. passed a message on to Hanna Canada as I received a copy of the U.S. email to Hanna Canada. Hanna Canada di get in touch with me initially.

Anyone notice the pink hue of the Alk checker on their site, just wondering if that's just a photo op choice since the previous checker was always blue/green.

Surprise, surprise Hanna Canada just got back to me and told me that they just got a limited supply of new agent, it will be sent out to me today or tomorrow. We will see if they keep their word....

The hardware might be the same, but they will be calibrated differently, at least. The Marine Checker should read higher than the freshwater Checker, unless the chemistry is very different.
