Just wanted to say hello.

I'm in the process of starting a new tank and have enjoyed searching the posts and learning as much as I can about this hobby/passion.

I've got my mixing station almost complete and the tank and stand in place. In the next couple of weeks I'll be ready for rock and sand.

I know its a slippery slope but there are worse things in life to spend your hard earned money on that's for sure.

where are you located- local help is a great for placing rockwork, lifting sand ,etc.
 
Thanks all. I'm going to start on the smallish side with a 40 gallon breeder. I felt the stand was too low so I spent the last week making a 12" high spacer out of 2x12's. Everything is now set and I just received the last of the equipment orders via ups.

I plan on keeping corals and a few fish but definitely not too many as I know they need their space.

I live in the Wexford area and have checked out Elmer's, Sea Horse and Aquaworld, which I seem to like the best.

Welcome. Look forward to seeing the progression of your tank. How big is it? What types of corals you planning? Theres plenty of frags floating around. If you need an extra set of hands or any help/advice I am just down the street in cranberry just shoot me a message.

You need to check out Davesaquastock, hes only about 10 minutes outside of wexford. They have been ramping up their livestock/coral selection but hes the go to guy for dry goods in the area. Will order anything you need in and will match or beat prices and gives a club discount also if you become/are a member.

At this point I haven't decided what I'm going to put in the tank...I'm more focused on water quality and picking out the sand and rock.

Aaron, welcome to the group, and it sounds like you are doing EXACTLY what you should be doing. Nothing good in this hobby happens quickly, but tank crashes and algae blooms can happen overnight. Get your sand and rock in the tank, with freshly made saltwater. The tank should start cycling soon after that. I would wait at least 30 days before adding any livestock. People will recommend cycling aides to get it done more quickly, but like I said, patience is key. Once your tank is fully cycled, you can add a cleanup crew (snails, hermits, etc), and a few fish. I would still wait a bit on the coral, but that's up to you. I had a fish only tank for over a year.

The Pittsburgh group is a wealth of knowledge, that ranges from beginners to seasoned vets. Don't hesitate to ask questions.
 
Thanks again for the offers and advice. I'm sure I'll be taking up your generous offers and asking lots of questions in the near future.

I was planning on getting some dry rock from BRS and then buying a live piece from one of the local places to seed it. It might take a little longer but I'm not in a hurry. I've also got my eye on Craigslist to see if any nice rock pops up.

I'll also be ordering sand in the near future.
 
I also purchased my rock from BRS and did not seed it with live rock. Instead I added live sand and waited 2 months. Then added a few fish... Waited a few months and then added small frags to the tank to see if it was able to handle it. Though I was not a noob to the hobby.

I suggest testing your water and taking your time. Nothing good ever happens when you rush.
 
I would be able to give you some LR to get you started. It is covered in coraline and I went crazy when I initially started up...now I think I have too much rock. I will also gladly give you some pulsing xenia which has taken over...time to thin out. Nearly everything in my tank came from others on this site.

I am about 5 minutes from aquaworld, if you want let me know next time you are in the area.
