New Hogfish

I saw this hogfish today and loved it. Looked up info on it... average size is 2in with a max of 4in. They are reefsafe and relatively peaceful. LFS is having a sale, 40% off all fish. The wife picked it up for me :), it's now in QT.

Nice, grats on the new acquisition, I really like hogfish and will probably get one for me when I have a big enough tank.

Thanks, they had a 4in one in a big display tank that was gorgeous. When they get their pink stripes they are stunning. Thing I am wondering is, they had it listed that it was in the wrasse family so do I need to throw in a conatiner of sand for it to dive into?

mine never goes into the sand... picks at it once in a while while searching for food, but doesn't need the sand

Good to hear. Fish store has had it for several weeks and eats like crazy. Hopefully it takes QT well.

Mine doesn't get into the sand either. Jumps alot for me though. Twice into the overflow, once onto the floor (through eggcrate) but I caught it in time.

Beautiful Yellow Candy Hogfish! I also have one in my 180 gallon, hes already maxed out at 4 inches or so. Just be careful, they may go after shrimp.

Hey western, your sig says click on the red house to see your 180g....I see no red house. Where do I click?

I have had one for about 4 months. It's about 2 inches.
Very cool fish. He sleeps in a hole in a rock.
He has left a pep shrimp alone so far.
I guess I have been lucky as he has not jumped from my 12 in. uncovered reef.
He will go in the new 180 in a month or so.

Mine eats like HOG and is very active. he is about 3 to 4 inches and very colorful. I heard a strange noise one evening and I looked at my tank and I saw him flapping around on top of my egg crate cover. Glad I was home, i dumped him back in no issues since. close call. awsome fish, i was waitign a while to see one in person not it seems like there are a bunch available

I love my candy hog. He jumped once, and was out of water for about 3 minutes, but is tough as nails. He does seem to be getting a little aggressive.

If I were you, I'd cover it ASAP. They are beautiful and pretty expensive and it would be a shame to loose such a beautiful and pretty expensive fish.

Well, it will have to wait about a month for the new 180.
The hog has been in that tank for a few months.
My tanks are in my garage and I have been busy building a stand and light rack and what not in the garage and the grand kids are constantly running by the tank to get bikes or toys.
So, my point is, he hasn't jumped with all the outside the tank commotion and I am hoping he makes it another month.
That certainly doesn't mean that something else won't cause jumping.
No guarantees of course, but that's how it is.
Oh yea, I paid $25 at my lfs, but any fish loss bothers me.

I lost one to jumping. I added one with a candy cane hog back in March and both got along well and ate pretty much from frozen to pellets. One night I came home and found it on the floor where it jump through a tiny gap between the skimmer and glass.

Well, this guy is definitely not shy. He has no problem eating, shows no interest in hiding in the QT and wants to know what you are doing looking in his tank. The LFS had him for a few weeks they said, I may not keep him long in the QT if he keeps up like this. QT doesn't do his colors justice, I know he will look outstanding in the main.
