Koralia 4 review
Koralia 4 review
So, I just wanted to give my side of the story on these pumps.
First off, these pumps are very good at what they do, which is deliver generous amounts of very wide laminar flow. They are much wider than the Tunze nanostreams. I have a 6025 and while I think it's great, the flow it delivers is still tighter than I would like given that my tank is only 24" long by 24" wide.
So, I disagree with some other review on here. While the magnets may seem weak, if you remove the suction cup covers on the magnets, they become quite a bit stronger since there is not so much insulation between the magnets. Because of the sound dampening effects of the suction cup mount, I kept it on and removed the suction cup mount on the dry side magnet and got a stronger mount that way, although I don't think it's necessary because of the way in which the suction mount works. I definitely like the suction cup/magnet mount. It is really secure once placed, more so than even the nanostreams. I like to think of it this way, the suction cup is there constantly being lightly pulled by the magnet so in essence it should never lose seal like other suction cups (it's essentially as if you were personally pressing the suction cup against the glass/acrylic ad infinitum).
The pumps are large though, the koralia 4s are slightly larger than a 12 oz. soda can so these are definitely larger than the nanostreams which are roughly the size of a tennis ball or baseball.
They are less manueverable than the nanostreams, but they deliver a wider flow pattern. Still, the extra maneuverability and additional focused stream of the nanostreams may make them more idea for hitting particular deadspots in your tank.
They are just as quiet or even slightly (very slightly) than the nanostreams. Both will not bother you in the least, although in certain positions the nanostream chatters a bit more (when adjusted into a good position, they become very quiet).
Build quality is a little better on the Tunze nanostreams, although honestly if you threw both of them at the ground, you'd probably break both. I'm sure no one is thinking of using either of these pumps in that way.
Price is of course much better on the Koralias.
The koralias don't have a prop stop, but always end up going in the right direction and it's by the very simple process of pulling the impeller assembly out of the impeller cavity when it's going the wrong way and then reseating and turning the right direction once it is pulled back into the impeller cavity.
So, anyways. In all honesty, I like these pumps more than the nanostream I currently own. I would like them slighlty more even if they were at similar price points, but they are about half the price and so are far more attractive in my opinion. However, I don't have a 6045, which would be comparable to the koralia 4s in the amount of flow they deliver, so it isn't the fairest comparison, but I can't imagine that the 6045s would have a wider stream than the koralias. Now, the 6055 (will be awesome for smaller tanks where people would like to pulse the flow) is a completely different story as it supposedly can flow even more than the koralia 4s and is controllable, so I would keep the 6055 out of the comparison as comparing AC to DC pumps is unfair IMO.
I'm sure all of you who purchased one of these pumps will be really happy with the results.
Cheers,
John
