New Hydor pump

I just got my 2 Koralia 3's mounted in my 55 gal reef. Mounting was a breeze and aiming possibilities seem endless. I replaced 2 Seio 820's and the Koralias seem to take up alot less space (even though they are about the same size) in the tank and produce more flow. It's also nice to mount them on the sides without it looking clumsy. really impressed so far. They feel pretty sturdy and and flow like crazy.

I'm on day three or so - I have two #3s in a 36x18x18 (50g).

Impressions:

1. Built like they cost $39 - but that's only appropriate and acceptable

2. Flow like crazy with NICE wide gentle dispersion (ala Vortech)

3. Easy set-up

4. I long for the day of a variable speed/controller/wave device

5. No measurable increase in heat

6. Countless ways to point the flow in a specific direction (likely, one of if not the best features for my tank)

7. My favorite feature - it actually works when you plug it in - likely to keep working too!!!!!!

thanks for the pics with the coke can for reference, sound-wise how are they compared to the seios, tunze, etc.?

I cant hear the ones i have running. they make a real quick clicking type noise on first start up,then completely silent after that..

noise is relative to how much noise the tank already makes and where it is.

for someone with a noisy sump, anything runs silent because the noise is drowned out by the rest of the equipment. someone who has a bedroom tank without a sump or skimmer is sure to think even the slightest hum is completely unbearable : )

well my tank is nearly silent,i tried sticking my ear up the tank to hear the powerhead and could not hear anything.Just my experience with them.

ya i have never used one of these , i was just making a point because people seem to have differing reports on how much noise they make : )

My two #3s make no perceptible noise - (I have no sump and if you backed up one foot from my tank, you wouldn't know it's there).

I disagree - hard to tell where to point but it does kinda stir up the whole tank. It is quiet(no noise or vibration) and cheap cost. There is nothing as good in this price range period. Very low power use. For that it is worth the money. I will unplug and plug back in to make sure mine are running the right direction.

According to the directions it says not to point them upwards-not sure why. Also according to all the pics from hydor you have them upside down.

Ok I got to it sooner than I thought I would.

I still have a problem with surface scum not going down the overflow since I added two #3 Koralia. No matter how I aim them I get scum on the water surface.

I get a vortex mounting them halfway down my 75G glass. Up higher and you can really see the vortex. Down lower you don't see it until food gets caught in it. I think this is why I can't clear off the surface scum since I added these.

spankey...

So mounting them to the surface is not a huge problem... I'd say you can mount them about 1.5", maybe 1" from the surface without vortexing (lots and lots surface are from the inlet grids), however as I stated before, these give out extremely wide and dispersed flow so the problem you run into is a lot of water movement at the surface (almost violent if you mount it that close to the top surface).

Herndog -

My two #3s are not reacting the way yours is -

I have no vortex with mine placed two inches below surface (yet they have ample flow).

I can point mine and direct, albeit wide, flow towards a corner, side, up, down, etc., etc.

The differences do peak my curiosity.........

Maybe you should try flipping yours around.
I have mine the way they are because the power cord is on top. It would be awkward to have the power cord coming up from the bottom.

I just re-aimed mine and turned them so the cord is on top. Still get a vortex no matter how you aim it. I unplugged them and if they try to start spinning the wrong direction the prop slides to the end of the shaft and hits the frame until it corrects and slides back to the bottom of the shaft.

They do shake up the tank water so that is good. I just have trouble keeping them from blowing my base everywhere and still flowing onto everything.

Mike

P.S.- I will say again there is nothing better for the money. I would buy again. I have had them 6 days now and may have been a little harsh for the price they cost.

Just received 2 of the 4's. Very good flow. Much more dispersed than my Tunze 6060.

They are very quiet. I can't hear them unless I put my ear to the magnet on the outside. I took the rubber base off of the outside and it seems to stick a little better. The magnets are a touch week for a 180 tank.

Overall size looks smaller than the Tunze in my tank.

I got 2 of the 3's, and put them on a wavetimer. during the freshwater test of my 20L, the water I put in was 60 deg. F. After 10 hours, the temp was 70.5 deg. F. Here's the kicker: the ambient temp. in the room: ~71 deg. F.

these pumps produce effectively no heat in my system!

Next I'll test both pumps + the metal halide to see if I can max the temperature.

How far do you see the flow moving? I am interested in some 4's for a 6' 150 tank.

I have one on either end of my 180 and there is flow in the middle of the tank. It is not super flow my any means there. I will probably add a 2 right in the back middle and I should be done, not bad for $130 total. One Tunze 6060 cost more than that.

Herndog...

You have scum on top of your tank because your pumps are too big and too strong for your sandbed...

It's blowing up all of the detritus and gunk in the sandbed and it's heading up to the surface...

It could really be a technical/mechanical problem and you could just return them and try out new ones.

They do flow like crazy so I really think your blowing a lot of crud that was in the sandbed up to the surface.... not so much a problem for me because I am barebottom.

I might just turn them on and off intermittently and let the blown up crap get processed/filtered by your skimmer or settle in the sump where you can suction it off.

Cheers,
John
