I have the 4's and its a great pump and an awesome value.
The only thing i don't like is the flow pattern. I don't think its a problem with this pump but all prop pumps. All the flow comes out the top of the pump in a \_/ shape. I would like it to be a more of a stream.
Really? i guess i will buy one of the tunze nano stream to compare it to.Originally posted by jacmyoung
But it is unique to the Koralia pumps to have the V shape flow because of the shape of the crossbar. Apparently many like the shape others don't. I read one member zip tied a 1.5" ABS coupler to the front of the pump to force a stream out of the pump.

jacmyoung - Is your Hydor modded? I agree that a stock Hydor's flow is very wide, so it's not felt at the end of the tank. Even in my 3 ft wide tank the stock K4s aren't enough. However, when I stuck a Dumas in them, they moved a lot of water and they moved them in a more of a "streaming" action. Even just one of them was too much for my 3ft tank, but when I downsized props, I was able to find the right flow that I was looking for. Perhaps this is what you were looking for.
I think this is one of the benefits to the Hydors. Their nice out of the package, but if you have a larger tank and need a little more flow, it'll only cost a couple bucks in parts and an old MJ.

Easy. just take a small length of PVC pipe that is the same diameter as the Hydor's output and glue that on.
Personally I don't know why people fuss so much about the stream. Having a wider and more dispursed flow like the Hydor allow you to point at the corals without fear of ripping their flesh off.
In order to start in the right way, some time the impeller come
out of the motor and come into the right way.
For this reason with a normal wave maker (that gives on or off), many time
the pump could start with that principle.
In my opinion, that kind of wave maker could be dangerous for the fishes,
they could come into the chamber impeller when the pump is in off.
We are studying a new wave maker (probably ready to sell at the end of this
year) for our Koralia, it doesn't come in off directly but decreasing
gradually the frequency of the impeller.
In this way, the impeller will be never stopped and the fishes can not come
inside the chamber impeller.
Anyway, We are doing also a component to apply in our Koralia, in this way,
it can be used in various Wavemakers, I think that it will be available in
about 3 month.
At your disposal for any further informarion

I modded my K4 with an Octura 1240 prop, got much more flow out of it but the K4 magnet holders could barely have a firm grip on my 1/2" glass with the heavier motor in K4, that in addition to the larger pump size, I ended up using modded Tunze 6025/6045 and 6055.
Hydor is supposedly working on a more powerful K pump but the same size of K4, if so I wish they also upgrade the magnet holders. Most large tanks have glass panels more than 1/2".
The size of K4 pump should be able to pump out as much as 2500 gph, and with aggressive pricing they can be a hot seller.

I used the Koralia 4s on a WaveMaker for about a month.....until I could not handle the startup noise anymore and got the Seio controller. Now life is peaceful and quite again.
With the Seio controller the Hydors are always on, they are just cycling between 100% and 50% at the time intervals you set. Much better all around since Hydor does discourage the use of Wavemakers and states that it will shorten the life of Koralia.
